Civilian defense committees in Woodlawn and South Shore formed as initial sessions were held. Woodlawn's executive board under Joseph Fitzgerald elected morale and women’s activities chairs and planned a block worker network with subcommittee steps. South Shore named Walter J. Riley as chairman and prepared wardens’ recruitment with a mass meeting for cooperation of black workers.
Funeral services were held for 10-year-old Hilde Dalgreen of 1432 East 66th Place after his sled broke through the ice on Jackson Park Lagoon opposite 62nd Street. He was a Scott School fourth grader. His mother, a restaurant worker, said Hilde planned to visit his aunt when he disappeared with friend Leo Torres. A park officer recovered the body from the water.
A 1942 Ford sedan goes to Mrs. Kenneth Roney in Woodlawn after the 10 week Holiday Promotion Drive. Winning number 702221 was drawn Monday night at Casino Moderne with 50 prizes announced and consolation awards of $1 for other ticket holders.
The Coast Guard established a training base at the University of Chicago Midway campus with about 250 recruits settling in Judson Court dormitory and nearby hotels. Capt Shanley said this marks the first leased Coast Guard training site reflecting expanded service activity. Local housing leaders warned the 590 added men will strain Woodlawn, urging community cooperation as University of Chicago moves students to alternate quarters.
About 15,000 Southeast side men aged 20 to 44 who have not registered are slated to register at selective service boards on February 16 or on February 14 and 15 as alternates. Citywide, more than 250,000 are expected to register, in contrast with 496,628 current registrants. Roosevelt proclaimed February 16 for those born after February 17, 1897 and before December 3, 1921. Inductions continue as boards prepare lists and reclassify those aged past 28 in class 1-Hi, which is being eliminated.
City council members and top officials plan a virtual attendance as Alderman Thomas J Daley of the 7th ward is honored after his death from a heart ailment. Funeral services are set at 9 30 a m from 7659 Jeffery avenue to St Philip Neri church with burial at Holy Sepulchre cemetery. Pallbearers are Raymond Crowell George Rooney William Mooney Thomas Hughes James Papageroge and Christ Rasmussen. Daley lived at 2662 East 78th street and had returned from Martinsville Indiana before his death after a prior heart attack on a train to Springfield for a political inauguration. The council debates filling his seat ahead of the 1943 election amid a budget session.
City council approves an ordinance banning parking between midnight and 7 am on two Southeast Side arterial routes to aid snow removal. Snow will be cleared curb to curb on 100 miles of busy streets with cooperation from Chicago Surface Lines, the Chicago Motor Coach Company, the city, and the state. Affected streets include Stony Island Avenue from 67th to 130th, then to Torrence Avenue, and South Shore Drive from Jackson Park South to Mackinaw Avenue and beyond to the state line.
