In a quirky holiday note, a Southeast side young woman uses a parsley sprig tucked into her Christmas blouse with pearl cuff buttons as a mistletoe substitute. The sprig allegedly works as a romance charm, and the man under it does not mind. The piece adds a local trivia line that American mistletoe is the state emblem of Oklahoma.
Five year old Janet Sue Craig daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur B Craig at 9035 Blackstone Jr helped push war bond sales with her 14th $25 bond this week. City service centers saw record turnout with 187598 attendance between Christmas and New Year’s as 942 centers closed the year.
Bradwell School on Burnham pioneers education innovation while aiding war work. Pupils collected scrap earning $121.32 shared between the Service Men's center and the School Children's aid. Weekly war bonds and stamps sales totaled $4,412.25 from September to December.
South side soldiers posted in England write home about seeing Westminster Abbey and the Law Courts in London. Corporal Jimmie Regan Lowe of the 1st Division sends a postcard of Westminster Abbey to the Economist, praising English sights as a new world. They joke of hard camp life and sing they will reach heaven after hellish experiences, while a puzzler about a bite of egg closes the note.
An indoor flag dedication for 40 Yoondlawn young men in the armed forces is set for 2:30 p m Sunday in the Venetian room of the Southmoor hotel. A parade will follow to 67th Street and Blackstone, where a flag will be raised and a plaque dedicated. Speaker State Senator Walker Butler and Walt Sands will participate. Woodlawn post American Legion will lead the parade.
Two bandits threatened night clerk T. B. Craft and watchman Thomas Wilson at the Miramar hotel lobby at 5 a.m. Saturday. Craft surrendered $27.50 from the register and Wilson’s wallet with $56. victims were ordered into an elevator and forced to ascend.

In Springfield the 63rd General Assembly opened with two veterans and two newcomers from the 13th senatorial district occupying four seats. Speaker Elmer Schnackenberg, veteran lawmaker and former speaker, was unanimously chosen to continue leading the House. In Washington, William Rowan took his seat as the new representative for the second district. Southeast side legislators previewed bids to push measures, with Schnackenberg declaring the task to defeat many bad bills as a priority.
Southeast side residents seek to convert homes into extra dwellings for war workers. A new plan by National Housing Administrator Philip N. Klutznick speeds approval to four days after application, if conditions are favorable, by centralizing processing in Chicago. Over 100 Southeast applicants have already sought conversion at the War Housing center in Waldemar Weichbrodt's area, with 70 from District 1 and 52 from District 2. District offices will open in the coming weeks.
Chicago area voters hear from several candidates in the Seventh ward campaign. E M McDonald 39 born Chicago seeks aldermanic seat with Republican backing and mass meetings planned. James Ennis announces Democratic bid from South Shore with 25 years in the city. Dr Harry E L Timm endorsed for Republican alderman by ward captains after 26 years in the ward. Election set for February 23.
The Training School Service Men's center at 83rd st and Jeffery ave will operate seven days a week after a Tuesday night committee vote. Sailors in training at the Advanced Aviation Materiel school at 87th st and Anthony ave are using the center from noon to midnight on weekdays and until 1 a.m. weekends. The center opened New Year’s Eve and has been open daily, with 800 local women registered as hostesses. Canteen supplies are being requested from residents and hours include a noon to midnight weekday schedule and 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. on weekends.
Woodlawn Business Men's association hosts its annual officers installation at the Hayes hotel corner 64th street and University avenue next Tuesday. Guests Hal Totten Harold Muddy Ruel and Johnnie Gotselig will speak briefly after the ceremony. Albert Chapman leads the executive group.
Elizabeth Conkey, member of the Cook County board, will speak on The Duties of a Cook County Commissioner next Wednesday at 11 am to the South Shore League of Women Voters. The Bryn Mawr Community church at 7000 Jeffery Ave hosts the meeting.
The Chicago Park District opens wartime fix-it shops in Calumet and Tuley parks to repair household items hard to replace. Operated by William Sands, the Calumet shop serves youths 10 to 16 on MonWedFri at 3 15 p.m. Tuley park runs TueThu at 3 p.m. and 9 a.m. on Latin days. Adults may volunteer evenings by appointment.
Roy H Dieterich aged 27 has been commissioned major while stationed in India after three years in the army. He wrote to his parents Roy H Dieterich 7914 Dobson Ave and his wife and 20 month old daughter Ann reside in Wilmette. He is a Bowen high school and Purdue University alumnus who left the U.S. for India last March 17 with the rank of lieutenant and was promoted to captain shortly after.
Pvt. Arthur Kunde Jr. 22, Forsch high school baseball star and White Sox farm team first baseman, writes from Africa describing making a practice diamond, rugged conditions, and hope the war ends soon. He notes his parents in Illinois and his prior life including Hirsh High School and University of Illinois.
Private Marc Johnson 23 of 1544 EB 61st St is awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery detaching wounded men from a burning troop ship during a Japanese air attack. General Douglas MacArthur presented the decoration as Johnson fought on the Buna front.
Sgt. Robert Randall of Ft. Benning Ga earned commendations from his division officer Maj Gen John Milliken and from Frank T Maxson for leadership and bravery after a troop train wreck near Easton Washington on November 20. He applying a tourniquet and first aid saved the fireman who later recovered. Randall, 22, awaits home leave after completing infantry officer training February 24.
