Mrs Oren L Smith aged 56 died at her Chicago home after cardiac asthma. The body lies in the chapel then Lorimer Baptist church for funeral at 2 30 pm tomorrow at 73rd street and St Lawrence avenue. Burial to Rock Island Illinois. Survived by husband two sons Meredith and Frederick a daughter Thelma sister Mrs George Entrikin and four brothers Willard Carleton Edward Lerchen Lester Lerchen and Mr Blunt.
Mrs. I. C. Lochow and her husband own a 633 Exist Street delicatessen. A gunman entered Saturday night and aimed at Mrs. Lochow. She retreated toward the cash register, grabbed a defensive weapon, fired, and dropped behind the counter as the bandit fled.
Alfred G Wardley of 6150 Ellis Ave was appointed director of the Junior Red Cross and assistant manager of the Chicago chapter of the American Red Cross. The appointment, effective January 1, was announced by James B Forgan. Wardley, born in Newcastle Pennsylvania, is a Denison University graduate who studied at the University of Chicago and Columbia. He has been principal of Alexandria High School and superintendent of Union High School and served as a field representative for the Red Cross in Minnesota and North Dakota.
Newly published book profiles Richard W Wolfe a longtime Chicago civic leader known for public works service 1927 to 1931 and advocacy of Thali freedom and American ideals. Biographer William H Stuart portrays Wolfe as a champion of South Side outlying communities with homes schools churches and the future of Chicago.
A four name grave marker stands at Oak Woods cemetery marking the May 11 1939 grain elevator disaster in South Chicago. Ernst Bary Lows Kalberg Henry Kreal and Wilbers Humes shared a single grave due to inability to identify individuals. The granite monument lists their ages and addresses with a brief epitaph noting their deaths in the dust blast and fire. Funeral services followed and remains were buried.
A historical spoof notes Leap Year traps for men as 1288 Scottish law allegedly prescribed penalties for failing to wed a suitor. The piece jokes Emily Post, calls the era sappy, and argues women seize mating chances when Leap Day arrives.
A gas station blaze at 1334 78th Street resulted in two deaths from suffocation after flames trapped them in the storeroom and washroom. Charles Mayer, 22, of Princeton Avenue, and James Duncan, 27, of South Shore Drive, were found face down near the washroom door. Coroner's jury ruled accidental death.
Dr and Mrs R E Crawford of 8301 Maryland Ave arrived home safely after altering plans to ride the Louisiane to New Orleans for New Year and missing the Panama Limited wreck near Arcola Alabama. They instead boarded the Creole after departing Chicago Friday.
The South Area Safety Council meets at noon today at the Chicago Beach hotel Hyde Park. Roy F. Healy chairs the council, a clearinghouse for safety and traffic matters on Chicago's South Side, to discuss 1940 projects.
