A young man must reach a home by five. Riding at 12 mph hits exactly on time, while 15 mph arrives an hour early and 10 mph arrives an hour late. The distance equals the speed multiplied by the time needed, yielding a precise miles total. The note also mentions historical weather recollections and idle thoughts.
Barnett Chaiken of 63rd Street shows a collection of about 30 autographs from national and international figures including the late Lord Lothian and John Cudahy along with signatures of Franklin D. Roosevelt and many cabinet members. Five new New York type garbage trucks will join operation on the Southeast side by next Monday. Edward Harris twenty five of 7507 Chappel avenue escaped serious harm after his small truck was hit on the left side by an Illinois Central Loop-bound train from South Chicago at the Cregier avenue crossing on 71st street. The vehicle was dragged 135 feet before stopping. Harris suffered only minor scratches. Barris, Pope Grocery Co driver of 2210 East 71st street, was aboard the vehicle.
South East National Bank at 1180 E 63rd St votes an initial dividend of $2 per share payable today to stock of record December 20. President C A Beutel reports surplus rose to 250000 with a 50000 transfer from undivided profits and notes deposits exceeding 10 million for first time since 1935. Lo Cost Check accounts surpass 8500 with five cent per item plan. Auto loans exceed 1250 loans totaling over 500000 in principal.
Bonver R. Hitchcock, 42, a property inspector for an insurance firm, died at Berwyn hospital after his car skidded off Lawndale Avenue near Summit and overturned while he was en route to view property. The incident occurred the day prior.
The Kiwanis Club of Woodlawn will receive a new Kiwanis International charter at next week’s banquet marking the name change to Woodlawn South Shore. The move expands a 20th anniversary club founded in December 1920, with Diana Brodsky impressing attendees as a young pianist prodigy at the meeting.
Seventy two men from draft boards in the southeast area are listed to report tomorrow to induction at the 122nd Field Artillery armory. Names include Robert W. Mason and Harry D. Hannah from board 12 plus 17 others. 19 from board 13 led by Harry Stelmaszek and Casimir Kasmierczak.
John Davis, 14, of 7708 Oglesby Avenue, was declared out of danger and recovering after being shot in the head by friend George Mahn, 14, during an accidental basement rifle range incident at the Danis home on Friday. The bullet entered above the left ear and exited at the temple. Davis was taken to South Shore Hospital.
