Interviews across neighborhoods reveal varied plans for New Year’s Eve. Households consider staying home with family, hosting modest gatherings, babysitting, or attending a Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert followed by a family party.
On Christmas Eve a taxi passenger, Frank P. Janskie, gave Highland Cab Co. dispatcher Hazel Marcel a $100 bill after praising the cabby. He then handed $5 to three other dispatchers for turkeys, wishing them a merry Christmas before departing.
A House select committee concluded fluoridation is mass medication and warned Chicago and nearby suburbs will begin fluoridating their water from February or March. The report contrasts fluoridation with chlorine and notes fluorides cannot be removed by heating.
Alderman Emil Pacini an open breaker with Mayor Daley backs two Southeast Side candidates for Congress and state representative, promotes open primaries for the April 10 elections, and cites local roots. Pacini backs Carl Steinweg for Congress and Nick Svalina for state representative, both South Chicago natives. County committee supports Dominico Lupo for state representative and Michael Hinko for Congress.
South Chicago selects a site near the shopping center to build an off street parking plaza for 221 automobiles. Alderman Emil Pacini notes funds will come from the city parking facilities bond issue and two hour parking time is under consideration for shoppers.
Ground breaking for the $650,000 Beth Am Temple is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday January 2 at a site on S Coles avenue between South Shore drive and E 72nd street. Rabbi Eric Friedland and Gerald Herst will speak. The complex includes a sanctuary for 350, a ten classroom school and kindergarten, social halls, offices, library, gift shop and more. Percival Goodman is architect for the Reformed congregation which has met in the Community House nearby. Construction will take about one year.
A mailed postal card to the paper reports holiday bulb thefts in the neighborhood. A local resident condemns the act as vandalism and notes thefts occurred last year and again this year, affecting several homes.
The Chicago area is expected to see a major construction boom in 1955 with permits for December likely pushing total housing units up about 15 percent above 1954. In the first 11 months, 50,828 dwelling units were planned, including 42,762 single family homes and 8,066 apartments, with suburban and Chicago splits detailed. Demolition of residences rose 12 percent in the same period, totaling 514 structures containing 1,542 apartments.
T F McAuly, longtime South side resident, turned 90 on Christmas Day. He credits longevity to moderation and bachelor life, noting he never smoked heavily and drinks only occasionally. He lives at 6417 S Kenwood Ave with travels to California or Florida and a railroading past with a gold pass. He praises independence yet enjoys family invitations and recalls the 1893 Columbian Exposition with high praise for the first World’s Fair.
An 18 year old Southeast Chicago youth won one of four $500 college scholarships toward tuition at Illinois Institute of Technology. Donald A. Thomas, a 1954?5 graduate of Hirsch High School, earned the prize by working two hours daily delivering newspapers on home routes.
Two Southeast Side boys will become Bar Mitzvahed in the Congregation Rodfe Zedek at 5200 Hyde Park Blvd. Theodore Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Miller, has his ceremony at 9 am on Saturday. David Linetsky, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Linetsky, will be honored at 9 am on Saturday January 7 at 7742 S. Essex Ave.
A Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago report projects 1956 prosperity to dwarf 1955. It cites 16 percent industrial output gain over 1954, rising orders over 28 billion, a 30 percent investment surge, and higher profits with dividend payouts around 11 billion as retail and manufacturing strength strengthens into 1956.
E. L. Grude of 6948 S Oglesby avenue is named a flight engineer for United Air Lines. He served in the U S Air Force flying F 94s and F 89s and spent one year in jet operation.
