Daley, will employ 70 workers to prepare sites in schools, parks, and private property with Boy Scout supervision to ensure orderly skating.
Southeast side churches plan candlelight services on Christmas Eve and early Christmas Day. St John Methodist at 74th and Jeffery Ave will host a candlelighting ceremony and “March of the Magi” prelude, followed by a Christmas pageant. St Paul Evangelical Lutheran at 7619 Dorchester Ave offers a 6 AM candlelight service and 10:45 AM guest sermon by Rev Louis J. Schwartzkopf, with a children’s Christmas program at 6 PM Christmas Eve. Windsor Park Lutheran at 76th and Saginaw Ave begins at 5:45 AM with multiple choirs and solo performances, led by Rev Arthur Kaub.
Jerome F. Cermak 53 years old assistant engineer in the city engineer's construction division died after a two week illness at Weadlawn hospital. He supervised South side city construction and represented the city as engineer on the 75th street water filtration plant. Services were held at 5203 Lake Park Ave with burial in Bohemian National Cemetery. He directed Roosevelt road viaduct and major water tunnels and was a charter member of Olympia Fields Country Club and member of South Shore Country Club. Survived by widow Blanche and family.
Five hundred ten carrier boys of the Southeast and Southtown Economust were guests of U S Marshal William H MecDonnell at the 12th annual carriers banquet in Hamilton Park. Woodlawn hosts a community Christmas tree the first in 13 years at Minerva and 64th streets with a service on Christmas Eve. Streets will close for the tree service and Chicago Park District decorations enhance the ceremony.
A break in at Almquist Radio Electric Appliance, 7403 Cottage Grove, yielded $788.94 worth of merchandise between 3:30 and 4:00 PM on Monday. Owner Harry Almquist, 8920 Langley Ave, reported the loss and police remained puzzled over how the thief removed the items and window.
St Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church installs a unique singing tower on the southeast side. A sound system in the belfry will broadcast church services and organ music to the neighborhood. The tower, donated anonymously, will be used on Christmas Eve and other special occasions.
Adolph R. Haas 53, head of a Loop dress firm, was killed when his car struck a railroad viaduct pillar on Jeffery Avenue near 95th Street while returning from gathering rocks for his rock garden. The crash left the vehicle demolished and Haas dead at the scene. An inquest was continued to January 4. Funeral services were held at 938 West Chapel.
The Grand Crossing Property Owners association will nominate new officers at 8 pm in St Paul Evangelical church hall at 76th street and Dorchester avenue. Current officers are John F O Brien president J J Markby vice president Philip Peterson secretary and W W Lynch treasurer.
Depositors of two South side banks receive 5 percent dividends totaling 213781 dollars. Stony Island State Savings at 6860 Stony Island Ave and Hyde Park Kenwood National at 1524 EB 53rd St paid, with receivers supervising. Checks mailed Monday. offices open 9 to 4 weekdays and 9 to noon Saturdays.
After three weeks the finance committee led by C A Beutel reports progress on a $50,000 drive to expand the Woodlawn Boys' Club facilities. The target funds seek 5,000 sponsors at $10 each to move the club from the second floor of the Woodlawn police station to better space.
Mrs. Margaret J. McKee former Bryn Mawr school principal died Monday in Vicksburg Michigan at age 69. She served over 30 years in Chicago schools including 20 years as Bryn Mawr principal from 1913 to 1933 and retired in 1935. She is survived by several nieces in Michigan.
