Heliport Planned for Harbor Area Development

Plans for a $20 million Lake Calumet harbor project call for a coordinated rail barge trucking and ship system on 200 acres east of the expressway. A heliport hotel and shops will serve workers and visitors with private financing and a 75 year land lease. Construction starts early 1958 with foreign shipping access in 1959 and a model distribution center linking Great Lakes Seaway to the Gulf.

Engineers expect Calumet Skyway to open to traffic within 90 days after the last girder was placed Tuesday. Mayor Daley and city officials attended the ceremony as the 125 foot high span over the Calumet river was connected.

Civic League asks street lights on S Ewing avenue and parks

The East Side Civic League sent a resolution to Alderman Emil V Pacini requesting mercury vapor street lights on S Ewing avenue from E 92nd to 114th streets and on side streets to Calumet Park between E 95th and 100th streets. The group also seeks a pedestrian overpass over railroad tracks at Calumet Park and will hold an open meeting in Calumet Park fieldhouse Friday at 8 pm with a South Chicago Community Hospital nurses school choir of 40 to perform carols.

Two Southeast Soldiers Finish Jump School Course

Two Southeast area soldiers, Pvt. James T. Ellis and Pvt. Craig E. Woodley, graduated from the 101st Airborne Division jump school at Ft. Campbell Ky. Ellis, a DuSable High school graduate, joined the Army last June and is married to Sandra who lives on S Calumet Ave. Woodley, a Chicago Vocational High school graduate, is the son of Mrs Effie Woodley of 10654 S&S Yates Ave.

High Accident Streets Listed for Southeast Chicago Holiday

The Chicago Traffic Division released a list of six high accident streets in the Southeast area for December 21 to 26, based on a 1956 study. Main causes include drinking and following too closely, with rising drunken driving convictions: 259 last month vs 203 in November 1956.

Oil Trucker Killed Fires. Ex-Clients Blamed Job Loss

Frank Novakowski, 47, a former South Chicago fuel oil driver, confessed to starting at least 25 fires in sheds and garages after customers complained he shorted fuel. Arrest followed two weeks of arson detail work. drivers, property owners, and a South Shore Oil firm linked to the cases. A $100 reward was posted for information leading to his conviction.

Railroader Promoted to Assistant Passenger Agent
