Alderman Daley says Works Progress Administration will begin the 74th Street sewer project within a short time. About 780 workers are expected, with completion targeted by June 30, 1938. The project, long sought by area residents, aims to relieve inadequate sewer service for large multi family buildings. Requisitions for materials and manpower have been made. the work is part of broader city improvements.
Formal dedication of the new 12 room Bradwell school addition at 7710 Burnham Ave takes place Monday at 8 pm in the school assembly hall. Board of Education members, PTA officers, and school officials will speak as students perform. The three story wing, ready since November 1, eases overcrowding with portable and basement rooms no longer needed.
A coroner jury ruled Joseph White 60 of 7000 Chappel Ave died by his own action while temporarily insane. White, once an investigator in the state attorney’s office, was found fatally shot in his apartment. The inquest at Drumm’s Funeral Parlors sided with despondency over health issues. Funeral services were at St Lawrence Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Civic-minded and a willing worker in cooperative community efforts, Paul L Anderson leads the South Bryn Mawr Improvement Association. Born in South Chicago 47 years ago, he rose from office boy at Carnegie Illinois Steel to lawyer after attending John Marshall Law School and Chicago Law School, funding his studies by day jobs and night schooling. Five days after the killing of William King near his Dante avenue home in Grand Crossing police have not solved the case. Mortimer Hamburger was found slain by a single shot around 10 30 p m with a motive initially thought to be robbery but no gun was found on the victim. Witnesses described a robbery attempt with two assailants fleeing on foot and a car waiting for a getaway.
Woodlawn Business Mens Association hears festival report at a luncheon meeting held at Hayes Hotel. Promoters say the Holiday Festival appeals to Woodlawn shoppers and note strong response. Plans for the final grand drawing are announced with the Casino Moderne balloon donated for December 20 event. Drawings will be made by judges for the winners.
J Leslie Rosenblum was named chair of the nominating committee at a South Shore Lions luncheon held at the South Side Swedish club. The group will prepare a proposed slate of officers for the coming year to be presented at the December 14 meeting at the same club.
At the opening dinner of the South Shore YMCA finance campaign committee in the main hall at 2318 F Street North, pioneers of the annual drive for funds were recognized. Reno Petersen, chairman, noted involvement since 1931, with 11 men leading the first drive that raised over 2305. Veterans and new volunteers were listed as key workers for the 1938 quota of 5800, highlighting years of service and planned expansion in volunteer leadership.
