South side hospitals and doctors laud the Third District American Legion program to supply 500 free blood donors for emergencies. Dr. Murray W. Sims leads the project testing donors and recording blood type and disease history for access by hospitals and physicians. six months to a year expected to establish. Dr. J. J. Moore calls it a very fine idea as plans for a central donor bureau begin to form.
Leaders from civic business religious and educational circles gather at the South Side Swedish club to form a South Shore Community council. Twenty two representatives attend the luncheon meeting chaired by Alderman Thomas Daley. Congress Raymond McKeough says the council will act as a clearing house for community needs and improvements. Daley pledges cooperation and suggests electing officers as the council covers 67th to 84th streets and Stony Island Avenue to the lake.
Captain Eugene Barry and about 75 officers attend the service for Johan Karl Jensen and his wife Helen at 1 pm in the 851 East 74th Street chapel. The couple died when their car struck a Grand Trunk train at the 115th Street crossing near Sacramento Avenue. The coroner ruled accidental death and urged electric flasher signals at the crossing. Jensen served since 1922 and belonged to several Danish fraternal groups. the couple had no children.
Southeast firemen will collect and repair old toys for needy children this Christmas. Chief Edward Green of the Chicago Fire department leads a project using about 50 WPA workers at 847 W. Harrison St to refurbish toys for year round joy. Residents may donate at fire or police stations or bring toys to schools for pickup.
The Legion of St Therese will lead a novena at Carmelite St Clara Church at 64th Street and Woodlawn Ave to prep for Christmas. The event runs from next Sunday to Monday December 12 with special hymns before the altar and a 63 member choir of Southeast boys ages six to twelve.
Rev. Paul S. Johnson will deliver the address at Crerar Memorial Presbyterian Church anniversary dinner. C C Hagen of Second Presbyterian will greet. Sunday ends with communion and new member presentation as Rev. H Ray Berger speaks on Loyal Forever. The church grew from a 1895 mission Sunday school funded by John Crerar.
Bondholders in the Southeast community will hold two mass meetings within a week. The first is tomorrow at 8 p.m. at Tuley Park Fieldhouse 90th Street and St Lawrence Avenue, the second next Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Russell Square Park Field House 83rd Street and South Shore Drive. John A. Hansen and J. L. Tupy will lead and explain bond rights under the new law. All bondholders are urged to attend. no admission charge.
Winners in the South Shore Chamber of Commerce amateur photography contest were announced by E. S Sehlesberg. First prizes go to Mrs. L Mudd for Rainbow Beach photo in the new picture division and Mrs. Helen J. Germain for Cheltenham place in the old picture division. Prizes awarded to John Spray, Mrs. W W Bergmann, I W Landis, M A Marston, Mrs. Arthur C Van Antwerp, and Mrs. Thomas Davis. Winning photos will be displayed at the South Shore library with other local association winners.
The American Red Cross held an invitational tea at the new South Shore unit headquarters 1835 East Fifteenth Street to honor Roll Call volunteers and announce planned services. Susan Murphy and Irene Sidley from Chicago headquarters assisted, with Mrs. Walter O Halloran as general chairman.
Grand Crossing-Chatham Chamber of Commerce prepares a boxing and vaudeville show for Tuesday at White City arena. Capt Patrick Brady reports 1000 plus attendees are anticipated. proceeds fund the chamber Christmas party for local children. A constitutional bylaws review and a chamber promotion campaign were also discussed.
Engineers from the Illinois Commerce Commission led by H. B. Barnett opened an inquiry at Alderman Daley’s request into hazardous conditions along the South Chicago branch right of way. The probe will measure crossings and platforms, review past accidents, and consider fencing and better crossing barriers to prevent further tragedies.
In Chicago a Keep Chicago Safe bulletin notes rising traffic deaths and accidents through October into November. It cites 24 percent fewer fatalities by Oct 1 versus last year’s nine months, then a spike in November with 36 deaths in the first half of November and 62 deaths for last November.
