The Cazza retta family of Wood Street built a rock garden at 66th and Wood streets to honor Rev Patrick Joseph Scanlan died eight years ago. Louis Calzaretta started the project with help from his father Emil and brothers Henry and Emil Jr. The display features a grotto, a castle, a lake, two fish ponds, and a six foot corn plot. Air raid wardens in Blocks 2 and 4 Zone 12 passed exams 100 percent. Capt James C. Voves notes the achievement.

Two Artillery Relics Sold For War Effort At South Shore Club
Two tons of relics from the last war including a French and an Italian cannon at the South Shore Country Club are to be melted down in metal furnaces. The 4,350 pounds will be contributed to the current war needs by John B. Wilder, a black captain from the area overseeing the collection and melting.

July Beach Attendance Tops Five Beaches in Southeast Side
About 1,579,000 people enjoyed four Southeast side beaches last month. Gard Street had the highest turnout with 699,800 visitors at its bathhouse equipped beach. 67th Street drew 266,000 swimmers, 57th Street had 454,090, 49th Street saw 139,260, and lifeguards reported 46 rescues with eight CPR efforts. First aid reached 663 at 63rd Street as managers expect attendance to drop after Labor Day.

Mrs Patrick Brady Dies Wife of Former Captain
Loretta Brady wife of Capt Patrick Brady former police captain at Grand Crossing station died after a long illness. She and her husband married 84 years lived at 8238 Evans Ave and were mourned at St Francis DePaula church before burial at Holy Sepulchre cemetery. Survived by daughters Mane Brady and Mrs Eileen Kilpatrick. Captain Brady served 35 years on the Chicago police force and retired in 1941. He remains active as a receptionist at a Chicago newspaper office.
