Cal Sag widening bids set for fall start

U S District engineers ordered bids for the Cal Sag widening contract from 60 to 225 feet with a nine foot depth to allow two way barge traffic. Ancient Iraq yields clues to early village life and farming

E 79th Street Cleaned Up From Indiana To Jeffery

Alderman Einar Johnson announced that E 79th street from S Indiana to S Jeffery avenues was cleaned on Tuesday August 16 with cooperation from Ward Superintendent Vito Sessa the Southfield Merchants Association Grand Crossing Chatham Chamber of Commerce and the police department. No parking signs will be posted Monday August 22 along E 75th street from Indiana to S Jeffery avenues for cleaning Tuesday August 23.

Missing Crow Baffles Southtown Neighbors on Mozart Street

A jet black crow once a fixture on the 7300 block of S Mozart Street vanished after a May visit to friends on Washtenaw Avenue. Neighbors recall it perched at third floor windows, pecking for treats, and fear it found new friends elsewhere. The Fergusons provided care after the bird fell from its nest in April, and a court once dismissed a local dispute about the crow’s aggressiveness.

Protest Over Zone Change For Hawthorn Mellody Dairy

Residents near the southwest corner of E. 73rd Street and S. Kimbark Avenue oppose rezoning to allow Hawthorn Mellody Farms to open a distributing station. Baseball School To Hold Sessions In Southeast Parks

The Rogers Hornsby baseball school will hold sessions in Southeast parks and playgrounds before September 2. An August 23 meeting runs 7 to 8 p.m. at Woodhull playground 7342 East Enclave, followed by a final September 2 session from 10 a.m. to noon at Bessemer Park E. 89th St and South Chicago Ave. The program, free to boys under 17, is sponsored by the Mayor's Youth Sports bureau with Chicago Park District, bureau of parks and city public schools cooperation.

Southeast Student Wins Jubilee Award

Nancey Lane Peters of Chicago has won the Golden Jubilee award of 1000 from the Chicago PTA District 1. A Bowen High School January graduate, she ranked first in class and was valedictorian with a four year average of 97.07. Peters attends Carroll College Wisconsin with a four year honor scholarship, majoring in mathematics and history. She plans to teach in Chicago schools.
