A Homeguard lunch is planned at the Better Home institute on E Jackson blvd with Mrs. Morris Berk chairing. A flag dedication is set for next Monday at 65th pl and Blackstone ave.
Louis Witte 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Witte of Marquette Road, earned a navy bureau of aeronautics award for building a scale-model aircraft used in experimental work. Adm. J. H. Towers signed the certificate praising his war-time service to the navy. He made the model as a Parker High School model airplane class member.
Fred M. Clark and son Bob of Aberdeen Street with Mr Clark's brothers Thomas of Morgan Street and Joe of East 84th Place returned from a Blue River Wisconsin fishing trip. They say they caught so many fish a gathering of 35 relatives could not dent the catch.
A quirky item notes V shaped potatoes unpacked by Emma Folksdorf and claims of wartime production in Chicago. It mentions incendiary bombs on Tokyo by Doolittle forces and cites Chicago workers in war production with a large payroll.
Merrill Humphrey announces September 12 as the banquet date to cap the Woodlawn Property Owners league lawn and garden contest. The International house at 1414 East 59th Street hosts the dinner with prizes awarded for outstanding entries. judging ends in August and exhibit displays will appear at 1321 East 63rd Street.
Sgt Major Edwin Fobes of the Flying Tigers, back in Chicago after the group’s disbandment, plans to marry Betty Washburn on August 22. He then expects to join the U.S. air forces again to continue fighting Japan. At a Kiwanis luncheon, Fobes, Chinese consul-general Chang Lok Chen and Flight Lieutenant Robert Brook praised Chinese troops and Tigers for racking up over 300 air victories despite heavy odds.
About 175 Southeast side residents and servicemen visited a former mansion at 975 E 60th St transformed into a USO center. Woodlawn and Hyde Park residents formed a Midway Service council to host 2,700 sailors, soldiers, and coast guardsmen from nearby naval school and area stations. The three story red brick building features oak beams two lounges and activities including reading, music, and letter writing.
A city ordinance advancing defense housing rules aims to promote row houses in crowded areas. The plan, backed by Alderman William Rowan, loosens building code standards to speed construction and uses federal housing limits of 6000 dollars sales and 50 dollars monthly rent.
The Chatham Lions Club will host Paul O. Sampson a nutritionist for a noon talk in the Southmoor hotel at 6646 Stony Island Ave today. Wives of members attend. songs by Mrs Mildred Dennison Lilly with Mabel Rarick accompany. President E Bernard Person is listed.
About 500 attendees gathered at the Hayes hotel for the unveiling of a Woodlawn plaque listing local soldiers who served in the war. John Hayes presented the tablet to the Woodlawn Business Men's association, and Judge David F. Matchett spoke of the families and fallen Sgt. Charles Auld who died in a Cologne raid. Elmer Auld added a gold star for his brother, and Taps closed the ceremony by the Woodlawn American Legion post. Continued on Page 7.
Dedications honor service members and pledge to the nation as Southeast Side residents host two more flag ceremonies next week. A previous event featured 11 veterans named on a plaque and a 30 foot flagpole funded by local volunteers.
The text urges residents to display the Stars and Stripes. It advises apartment dwellers to hang the flag from a front window or courtyard with landlord and tenant cooperation and to place a flag staff in the front yard for single family homes. Old Glory should fly in front of every home.
Two Kenwood residents share hope their relatives listed as missing in action by the war department may be found alive. Mrs. J M Chandler and Cecile Bolar speak of Lt. J M Chandler and Pvt. Charles Sutton Bolar both missing since mid year. A third missing is Capt Gerald Keenan aboard the Langley.
A 16th birthday party at Helen Marks home ended with the drowning of 18 year old Frank Wisniewski at Palmer Park pool. Lifeguard Marks tried to save him as friends Phylis Donahy 17 Edward Slouczewski 21 and others waited. Charles Vinces pulled Wisniewski from the water after he disappeared beneath the surface.
