Ward designs and makes her own clothing and has appeared on Pulse magazine cover.
Edward Carlisle, 24, of 7558 Calumet Ave, arraigned in Felon Court on robbery charges after Hull Dobbs coffee shop heist. Carlisle confessed, claiming a fountain pen simulated a weapon, as victims Earl Hadock and Russell Edington identified him. Police described the suspect as 6'3" and 135 pounds.
Southeast siders will turn up the clock next Sunday at 2 a m sharp to place the city on daylight saving time. The city ordinance requires the change within the city proper and mirrors similar rules in surrounding towns to align with Chicago business and social life.
Official report of April 9 primary results shows Southeast side Democrats leading Republicans in four wards by about five to three. Total Democratic 61,300 vs Republican 37,874. largest gap in the 1th ward with 13,740 to 6,434. Congressional races saw McKeough sweep Democrats 86,491 to Garrity 17,916 and Frank 11,004. Moynihan led Republicans with 20,291 over Lindell 13,863. Ward races list several margins, with Schnackenberg winning a key Republican district vote.
Rob ert Mitchell of the Woodlawn Conservation project spoke at a Metropolitan Housing Council luncheon outlining a twofold neighborhood conservation approach. He described Woodlawn as an experimental model chosen for its geography and civic cohesion, stressing future development tied to industry transit streets parks and zoning plans. Mitchell urged city plan commission leadership with strong neighborhood participation and outlined three improvement levels: maintenance modernization and management supported by technical appraisal and management committees.
Scouts from troop No 750 led by Scoutmaster Zygmund Semrau plant 750 trees in a vacant lot at 82nd street and Brandon area, part of a plan to plant 3 000 trees to be given to homeowners after three years. The Russell Square Community committee coordinates the effort with local schools and 11 vacant lots under supervision.
Chatham Fields Evangelical Lutheran church at 81st st and St Lawrence will hold four services to dedicate a new chapel seating 265. Rev. Laurence Almaeck will officiate all services. The building includes a social hall, kitchen, parsonage apartment, and stained glass windows with Lutheran symbols.
Three local residents died from injuries in traffic crashes this week, including Mazel Newman of Hammond Indiana a 24 year old telephone operator killed in a motorcycle collision at 95th Street and Stony Island Avenue. Herman De Schryver age 41 and seven year old David Strelow died from injuries in separate crashes near 75th Street Stony Island Avenue and 59th Street Princeton Avenue. Funeral rites were held for the victims as authorities investigated the Calvary Park area crashes.
William Ruey a longtime Board of Education employee and Willard school engineer died at home after weeks of illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Clotilde Church, burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. He was a Chicago resident survived by his widow two sons Walter J. and William J. and a daughter Catherine Marie.
