Southeast side youngster Mary Barbara Trodden, age six, of 7719 Coles Ave, was named Wonder Queen on WGN TV's Wonder House show. Her winning entry How I Can Be a Good Neighbor earned her a ribbon crown and the hour's children's title.

Allen seeks donors to fund east and west end parks covering about three acres each with play equipment, baseball diamonds, volleyball, and water and lighting for preschool children.
Alderman Bowling reports hazards at the lakefront foot of 73rd Street will be addressed by May. Oscar E. Hewitt says public works will spend 20 000 to 25 000 dollars to fill and shore up the end as storms crumble the concrete and a wooden barricade was torn apart. Alderman Bohling has long urged shore protection due to repeated damage.
Jack Walsh aged 20 of 6913 Vernon Ave faces May 12 in Boys Court on charges of manslaughter and leaving the scene after a vehicle struck Edward James Rooks 57 of 7918 Rhodes as he crossed 511 E 79th St. Two companions Thomas Watkins 18 of 7191 Evans Ave and Walter La Freniere 19 of 7222 Rhodes Ave will also appear then on disorderly conduct charges. Walsh claimed he felt a hit but did not see a person and drove away before returning to the scene where police took him into custody. A new diagonal roadway in Jackson park links South Shore drive with Jeffery avenue opening today. It cuts turns near Marquette road and Jeffery avenue reducing the worst bottleneck on the southeast side. Completion of widening work and landscaping remains to be done in coming weeks. James H. Gately leads the project with engineers and the Chicago Motor Club.
Isabella Fitzsimons principal at 1745 Ellis Ave calls for help with a Revere Elementary project to clear 35 vacant lots for play spaces. Over the next two weeks crews will clear the lots and apply weed killer three times during weed season to aid hay fever sufferers. Adults and children are urged to contact the school to help through May 1.
South Shore YMCA Boys' club announces a series of events for Youth Week. Activities include 3 to 5 pm softball, kite flying, and marble tournaments at Bryn Mawr School on Tuesday, a 12:30 to 5 pm trip to the Museum of Science and Industry, and a cook-out at Eggers Grove by bus and bikes on Saturday May 1.
