Hirsch High Principal Retires After 36 Years at Hirsch High
Arthur M. Nichelson longtime Hirsch High School principal since 1929 and public school veteran since 1915 will retire near his 65th birthday. A reception Monday 8 PM at 7740 Ingle side Ave and an informal dinner next Wednesday at Congress Hotel will honor him with students, PTA, faculty and civic groups in the Southeast Side district. He helped transform Hirsch from a junior high to a senior high and under his leadership developed a strong student government, fine academic record and award winning music program. He authored civics texts and plans a rest and possible travels with his wife after retirement.

Victims of Southeast Side Strong-Arm Robberies
A Southeast side youth, Lee Thompson, 21, was attacked near 79th St and Mus kegon Burnham, robbed of cash, jewelry and clothing, and left in an alley. The assault marks a third such incident in three weeks amid ongoing police efforts. The victim, who walked home from a neighborhood theater, identified assailants as men in their early thirties wearing caps. Nearby, teacher Robert P. Russell, 8147 Jeffery Ave, was kidnapped and driven off by three bandits after a traffic stop at Bard and Jeffery. They abducted him to the forest preserves, then returned. Henry E. Hankins, 45, mathematics professor, died after a three-week illness, with funeral at 87th and Dorchester. He is survived by widow and parents. He lived 34 years on Ellis Ave. on the Southeast side.
