Train Hits Auto. Buchthal Father Fatally Hurt in Dowagiac
Charles E Buchthal Sr 57 foreman of the Southeast Economist composing room was fatally injured when his car was struck by a diesel train at a rural crossing five miles from Dowagiac Michigan. His wife Ethel was severely hurt. The couple were en route to visit daughter Lillian Swank on a farm near Dowagiac. Sheriff investigation and ambulance aid followed the crash with both Buchthals thrown clear and left at the scene before they were transported to Memorial hospital Dowagiac.

Victor Schlaeger Dies After Collapse in Hotel Lunch
Victor L. Schlaeger, 52, Cook County recorder and longtime Democratic figure, collapsed from a heart attack in the Walnut room of the Bismarck hotel while dining with friends. Funeral services were held at Immaculate Conception church. He had served in multiple public offices including county recorder and treasurer and was active in fraternal groups. Surviving: widow Grace, daughter Grace 15, brothers Edward Schlaeger and Thomas Sikorski.

City council approves land transfer for veteran housing project
