Chicago Motor Coach announces Monday morning service on the South Park avenue line between fist st and the Loop will resume after wartime curtailment. Northbound No 3 from Sist st will stop to 3rd st then express to the Loop during morning rush, addressing rider petitions noting long travel times. Alderman Roy E Olin presented a petition with 200 names to the bus company.
In Congress Race Vail a former second district congressman who lives at 6946 Bennett Ave seeks the Republican nomination. Opposing him is Bernard E. Epioen who lists 6941 Oglesby Ave as his address.
South side voters on primary day next Tuesday will find 12 Democrats and 20 Republicans seeking nomination on respective ballots for associate judge of the Municipal court. They are running for six year terms and 12 candidates will be nominated per party for the November ballot. One Democrat and one Republican seek the Adamowski vacancy to complete two years of a term. Democrats have no contest with 12 candidates for 12 positions. incumbents include Smith Daly Holland Kula Luczak McGarry McSweeney Sullivan. Republicans include six Southsiders among 20. incumbents not listed here.
Churches across the Christian world observe Holy Thursday and Good Friday with solemn rites and processions. Easter Sunday will mark the resurrection, about 2060 years since Christ’s crucifixion. A multi church Good Friday service by the Chatham Ministerial Association was planned at Hirsch High School on Ingleside Avenue, with Rev Raynold Hoover and several pastors set to participate.
The Republican primary for Congress in the 2nd district sees Richard B. Vail and Bernard E. Epton leading a contest against Jeremiah A. Cronin. Vail, former congressman and Vail Manufacturing head, is backed by the regular GOP organization, while Epton, a young lawyer, trails as Cronin is deemed unlikely to win. Vail touts lower taxes, Taft Hartley, and two term limits, pledging standard American principles.
Six Republicans and three Democrats compete in a Chicago area primary for the 13th senatorial district seats. Democrats John G. Ryan and Dr. Adam S. Mioduski seek renomination. Republican Edward Schneider seeks another term along with six Republican challengers including Marie Hf. Suthers and Ragnar G. Nelson. Ryan and Mioduski hold prior terms. Ryan chairs the 8th ward Democratic organization. Mioduski serves four terms and holds elections and reapportionments roles.
Mike the 10 year old ringtailed monkey at Smitty’s Pet Shop on Cottage Grove Avenue drew a crowd when he escaped his cage. He opened cages, ate dog food, shredded goods, and broke a glass window, prompting police arrival as he tossed an empty bird cage.
Jacob Cyle, address unknown, was fatally struck crossing Stony Island Avenue at 80th Street early Tuesday. He died at Jackson Park Hospital after telling police his mail comes at South Chicago post office. Driver John Hogan, 54, of 1454 E 67th Pl, remained at scene. Cyle suffered skull and multiple limb fractures. Inquest adjourned to next Thursday.
Coroner's jury rules two men trapped by a 25 ton rock at the lakefront died by drowning and asphyxiation. Police and firemen removed the body, likely months in the water, with traffic stalled along Lake Shore as rescue crews worked. Police could not identify the man. the body was recovered Sunday after a crane lifted the rock.
A new testing method used a helicopter to collect water samples from 30 sites near the South Side Water Filtration Plant. The 90 minute flight cut sampling time to hours and will be repeated semi monthly if approved, replacing older tug boat trips.
Work started last Tuesday on a 150 foot outdoor pool at 95th and State streets with a 50 percent completion target and underground filtration. A new fieldhouse at Washington Park 1601 South Park are is in preliminary planning with Ralph H. Burke Company paid for plans and drafting.
