Mrs. F. F. Merditz of South Park Avenue swam to the 68th Street crib in Leake Michigan at age 51 becoming the third woman to achieve the feat. Her daughter Mrs. Lewis B. Bell, age 63, had done it the day before, making the second. Mrs. Merditz now 79 remains an active swimmer.
A tiny lamp, not larger than a cigarette, is said to be 10 percent brighter than the sun and shown at the Chicago Lightning Institute. The note mentions delays for commuters and marks Pauline Quinlan leaving the Chicago Teachers College in June, detailing her roles and campus activities.

Police guarded Mrs. Alice Janssen 36 in St Bernard hospital after a gangland shooting left her badly wounded and Carville murdered. An inquest into Carville’s death opened, continued to allow further investigation. Brother-in law Snyder testified he last saw Carville about 10 pm the night before.

The Associated Clubs board meets at 7 p.m. to discuss the Spring dinner with Mrs. C. Whittier presiding.

Members of the Woodlawn Mothers' Round Table stage the operetta Miss Caruthers Returns at First Presbyterian Church for the Woodlawn Boys' Club fundraiser. A Lawndale branch concert precedes it with 40 youth performers. Proceeds support the drive led by Frank J. O'Brien.
Churches across the Southeast side join in Holy Week observances beginning Maundy Thursday with the Lord's Supper and continuing Friday Good Friday services. A noon to 1 15 p m cooperative service at the Grove theater features 16 area churches, with further services at the Avalon theater and St Paul Lutheran church. The Grove program includes organ music, scripture readings, sermons by multiple pastors, offertory prayers, and a benediction by Brigadier Axel Carlstedt. Participating congregations include Augsburg Lutheran Bethel ME Brookline Presbyterian Crerar Presbyterian Elim Baptist Elim Free Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Ingleside ME Lorimer Baptist Mission Covenant Park Manor Congregational and others.
Henry E. Beckstrom announces a Red Cross first aid course for South Shore residents. The three month program runs Wednesday evenings 7 to 9 at the South Shore American Legion post headquarters and covers fractures wounds shock and other injuries. Interested individuals should contact Beckstrom at Midway 7047. Edward J. Ryan supports the project.
Police pursue Carl Falcone after Robert Hall, 44, was shot at his home at 1534 East Tard Place Grand Crossing. Capt. Patrick Brady leads a nationwide effort with federal agencies aiding, aiming to close the first Grand Crossing murder case in over a year.
A weekend crime spree on the Southeast side netted 2715 dollars in cash and valuables. The largest haul came from Russell Ryan’s garage at 7611 Calumet Avenue where about 1800 dollars of tools were stolen and later found abandoned at 60th Street and Michigan Avenue. A novice gunman held up Robert Hart’s liquor store at 1842 East 79th Street, escaping with 150 dollars after forcing the clerk to hand over cash.
Woodlawn Business Men's Association will hear Mr. Stevenson speak on Over coming Sales Resistance next Tuesday at noon. The luncheon meeting will be at the Hayes hotel located at 64th Street and University, with H. L. Davenport, association president, presiding.
Officer Dennis Mahoney, known as Denny, has spent ten years near the entrance of the South Shore Country Club escorting visitors. He has 15 years on the force and plans a trip to New York City for the Fair, then returns to escort future presidents across the street. His family home is at 7814 Euclid Avenue.
Patrick Smyth and Roy Olin, newly elected Republicans, prepare to take office next Wednesday as aldermen for the 6th and 8th wards. Smyth vows a ward HQ and projects include playgrounds, a Woodlawn center, free clinics, better lighting, cleaner streets, and a ward advisory council. Olin aims to add more play space, proposing a park at TEbh st. and Jeffery ave, with safety and recreation at the fore.
