Old Dominion defeated Mississippi State 82 to 78 to win the championship of the tournament. The result is reported on page A-6 with highlights and standings from the event.
Gulfport Mayor A W Lang Jr announced at the year end Gulfport Area Chamber of Commerce meeting that he will seek election to his first full term in May. He cited completing programs and noted improved Gulfport Municipal Airport and bond refinancings saving the city over 500000, tax relief by five mills via higher water rates, and a $186000 general fund balance after a start deficit, along with an across the board pay raise.
The Centers for Disease Control extended its moratorium on the swine flu immunization program indefinitely to await a clearer link to Guillain Barré syndrome. The program was suspended December 16 as officials seek more facts about the association. Maryland will permanently discontinue its swine flu inoculation program due to risk concerns.
