In Jackson the 1977 legislature faces two Senate bills to extend the same legal rights to 18 to 21 year olds as those over 21, including contracts. a third proposal would specifically grant them similar liberties, though enthusiasm appears low.
Mississippi senators discussed bills to let 18 year olds serve on juries and to accept jobs tied to liquor selling. Sen. Carroll Ingram warned against high hopes for quick passage while noting last year’s property contracts law change reduced urgency. Other senators weighed merit and priority as debate looms.
About 300 of Global Associates 530 NSTL workers walk out in Hancock County over wage and benefit terms. Talks paused until after Christmas with union seeking 10 percent raises over 18 months and company covering health and welfare insurance. Union says NSTL techs earn less than rivals. staffing cut proposed in last offer.
The oil tanker Argo Merchant broke in half amid 10 to 15 foot waves and began sinking off Nantucket, spilling most of 7.6 million gallons of No. 6 fuel oil. Coast Guard officials call it a permanent wreck as a 100 mile slick threatens Georges Bank and lawsuits seek about 120 million dollars in damages. Captain Papadopoulos was questioned in Boston as eight crew members are deposited.
Ned Boudreaux, GRPC director since August 1974, resigns effective end of January. Jon Bennett, chair of the nine member board, says a search for a successor will begin. Balch is not selected to replace him. Boudreaux may return as a senior planner for GRPC covering Harrison, Hancock and Jackson counties.
Biloxi groups renew efforts to place a mayor council or seven member aldermen form on the ballot by next May. Petitions and signatures are being gathered from the West Biloxi Merchants Association and other locals to secure a referendum before or with the May 3 vote. If certified early, the process could delay the May election and extend the current city administration as districting and federal approval loom.
