The No 1 Pittsburgh Panthers arrived in the Gulf Coast city for a week of practice before facing the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day. Officials and fans greeted the team after their snowy trip from Pittsburgh.

A United Airlines mechanic on sick leave seized a DC-8 at San Francisco International Airport, took two hostages, demanded a flight crew fuel food and brandy, and diverted the plane's fueling. No passengers were aboard. the gunman identified as Palm Hinnant, in his 20s, armed with a Luger type handgun. FBI negotiators and a standby SWAT team monitored negotiations as the incident stretched toward three hours with no injuries reported.
The two hostages are Jerry Dusenbury, a mechanic, and Richard Funk, a shop manager. Dusenbury had replaced Hector Spencer as the mechanic due to his ability to operate the aircraft radio and communicate with authorities.
