Biloxi selects James A. Fairley as a month to month part time consultant engineer earning 1000 dollars monthly for four hours daily and also serving as building official. Mayor O Keefe cites city revenue uncertainty and North Biloxi annexation as reasons for not hiring a full time engineer.
Obituary notices list several local residents including Mary Louise Lanham of Gulfport and Bobbie Adams of Bay St. Louis who died midweek and are returned to local funeral homes for services. Quinton R. Sullivan and William Cruthirds also pass, with services at Gulfport Bay St. Louis Biloxi and Mobile institutions, plus other local deaths in Grand Bay Wiggins Escatawpa and Pascagoula.
Sam Favre longtime Bay St. Louis attorney and Hancock County Board of Supervisors counsel was admitted to Hancock General Hospital with a mild heart attack. His condition worsened to guarded status by Thursday night after a deteriorating situation since Sunday.
Dr. Susan B. Riley, 77, former English professor and dean at Peabody College Nashville, died in Clinton Mississippi after a lengthy illness. Born in Brookhaven she led the American Association of University Women from 1951 to 1955 and remained tied to Peabody for 40 years.
Madrid reports Prime Minister Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco was killed by a bomb in a tunnel under Coello street as his Dodge passed a church. A Basque separatist group claimed responsibility. Franco appointed Vice Premier Fernandez Miranda as caretaker for 10 days while security forces search for suspects.
Two thefts reported in Escatawpa Mississippi with a trawling motor valued at 95 dollars taken from W E Goodwins Wolf Ridge Road home and about 100 dollars taken from a jukebox at Patrick Sullivan s cafe on Highway 63. An attempted break into a cigarette machine was noted.
Washington report says the House Administration Committee denied Judiciary Committee Chairman Peter Rodino’s request for a “Destroy it Superspeed” paper shredder for the impeachment inquiry. Rep. Wayne L. Hays of Ohio leads the Administration panel in turning down the request.
UPI reports heavy fighting near Phnom Penh as government troops pull back from a 200-man outpost eight miles southeast under mortar and machinegun fire. In another area along Highway 5, rebels blew a bridge over the Tonle Sap as troops advanced toward the capital. Southeast of Phnom Penh Daun Sar saw a 200-strong garrison abandon under 60 mm mortars and rocket fire with 3 killed and 25 wounded. About 70 unaccounted for and seven captured.
In Belfast, a carborne machinegun attack killed one man and wounded two others in a street crowded with Christmas shoppers. Soldiers and police had cleared thousands from downtown minutes earlier when a bomb laden truck exploded causing fires and widespread damage. A police band played carols during the emergency as fatalities rose to 922 in over four years of sectarian conflict.
Biloxi will host its annual Christmas party Friday for city employees and members of the press. Mayor Sarry O'Keefe announced the noon gathering at the Biloxi Community Center.
Walter Fountain, general manager of the Biloxi Chamber of Commerce, warned the public about an epidemic of solic itation during the Christmas season. He urged businessmen and housewives to avoid commitments unless the solicitor has official permission from the chamber, noting the season invites such tactics.
The Mississippi forecast shows a warming trend over the weekend. Friday remains cold with highs near 30 to 40 and lows in the 20s to 30s, while Saturday warms to the upper 40s to upper 50s. Northerly winds 10 to 15 mph gusting, then diminishing by Friday afternoon.
Los Angeles UPI Bobby Darin died at 37 after a six hour heart surgery to replace an artificial valve. Doctors said he was too weak to recover. The singer known for Mack the Knife had four million selling records and two Grammys. Funeral services were pending.
