GOP strategists forecast hold in 1974 elections despite Watergate

Top Republican campaign strategists met with President Nixon saying inflation unemployment and the energy crisis would drive next year’s races. They expected only a small role for Nixon in campaigns and warned Watergate would cause limited erosion if economic conditions worsen.

Moss Point Man Promoted to Finished Products Supervisor

Moss Point resident John V. Coggins of 150 Lakeview Dr. has been promoted to finished products supervisor at International Paper Company's Moss Point mill. He will oversee the first four of the mill's five paper machines. Coggins, a Pascagoula native, joined the company in 1984 and previously served as paper mill tour foreman.

Unnamed Sender Sends $100 Mail Payment to Lake County Clerk

Lake County Clerk Don Molitor received a $100 bill in the mail with a note claiming it was the final payment owed to the county. The envelope had no signature or return address and Molitor expressed confusion over the unexplained payment.

Disarmed Bomb Defused by Baptist Minister in Pennsylvania

Rev. William E. Davis, 48, a Baptist pastor and state explosives inspector, disarmed a homemade bomb at the Blue residence in Washington County. The device, found after William Blue reported a bomb threat from his son Charles, contained gunpowder and various components but no detonator. Davis recalled past feats including removing a bank dynamite bomb and tackling explosives at a sporting goods store.

Gasoline Spill Causes Fire at Local Garage

A gasoline spill from a dropped tank ignited a fire at Jackson County Wrecker Service on Shortcut Road. Firefighters from Pine Island and Kreele stations fought the blaze about 45 minutes. Damage to the building and contents totaled $25,000, with a car and two motorcycles among the losses. No injuries were reported.

Murder charge filed against gang member in Mobile

Mobile police charged James Luther Stroud with first degree murder for the knife slaying of Charlie Lane 34 of Mobile at a local night spot. Stroud also faces assault with intent to murder Ronald Adams 31 critically wounded. Adams’ wife Betty Jean and Bill Eugene Fields charged with brawling in public with 16 others from the Bandidos gang arrested as witnesses.

Nixon signs bicentennial bill creating 1976 celebration body

President Nixon signed a bill creating the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration to run the 1976 celebration. The act replaces the bicentennial commission with a full time administrator and deputy, an 11 member board, and a 25 member advisory council. It authorizes annual appropriations of 1.375 million dollars for grants and up to 25 thousand dollars to each state bicentennial commission.

Warmer Weather Ahead For Mississippi Regions

Mississippi forecasts expect partly cloudy skies and rising temperatures through Thursday. South Mississippi highs in the mid 70s with overnight lows near the mid 50s, winds southerly 8 to 12 mph. North Mississippi highs will reach upper 60s with overnight lows in the upper 40s, same southerly winds. Central regions show near 70 highs, lows about 50, and similar winds, while South Central expects low 70s and Friday night near 50.

Sirica to turn over Nixon Dean tapes to Jaworski

UPI reports Judge John J. Sirica will hand the subpoenaed March 21 Nixon Dean tapes to Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski at a closed 10 a.m. session. Sirica has monitored the tapes and found no national security content. Jaworski will decide if any material should go to the Watergate grand jury.
