The Animal Welfare League answered a call from Mrs. Coretta Wilson at 5112 Monroe about a large, flightless Bittern found between buildings. The bird, about 24 inches long with a dagger-like beak, was covered for safety and later released back to its habitat when fit.
In a column of letters from residents, a disabled tenant laments aggressive housing inspections of an attic flat deemed an illegal conversion while neighbors applaud a landlord who maintained the unit. Other correspondence praises sewer and water services after a backup, and notes traffic fears near Austin and Division amid a new traffic control system approval and upcoming ceremony.
All seven Community newspapers will be delivered Thursday morning next week in observance of Memorial Day. Delivery day changes from Wednesday to Thursday while all news and advertising deadlines stay the same.
The Housing council of the Organization for a Better Austin will help tenants and neighbors of slum buildings in Austin have grievances answered from 9 30 to 11 30 a m tomorrow in the City Building court. Over 20 Austin buildings will be in court on Thursday as inspections and city actions move forward.
The Southeast Austin Youth Summer Program conference urged year round youth activities planning and noted summer pilots should lead to all year programs. Attended by 70 reps from UPC, schools, police, and ATOA, the event split into educational, recreational, and events workshops and pressed for female programs and adult participation. A mobile library concept and permanent library plans for southeast Austin were also discussed.
The Heart of Austin Community council invites the public to an 8 p.m. hearing at Our Lady Help of Christians to push a plan eliminating Hay Upper Grade Center. Richard W. Talbot explains a two step move to drop seventh grade this year and remove both upper grades by next year. He cites a Redmond plan substitute to reduce cross neighborhood enrollment and balance student distribution.
Angela Finnelly admires son Vincent Finnelly after his graduation from the Chicago police academy. Vincent, 24, joined with his brothers Thomas 26 James 23 and Anthony 28 all from the West Side. Anthony assigned to Homicide Sex Detective Division area 4 while Thomas and James patrol.
Citizens National bank at 5200 Chicago offers free 3 by 5 inch American flags suitable for home windows or car displays. Bank executive vice president Clarence Mann says the flags are ideal for Memorial Day and other occasions and can be obtained from any bank staff without charge.
The Christian Science churches will read a Lesson-Sermon titled Soul and Body this Sunday. The quoted line From in him we live and move and have our being appears as a scriptural anchor for the lesson.
Chicago police designate Bicycle Registration Week led by Supt. James B. Conlisk Jr. The mass effort uses youth division and community agencies to register bikes, with cards at police stations and dealers. Aimed at owner protection and safety amid rising bicycle numbers.
Austin joins Chicagoland for a Memorial Day parade starting 3 p.m. at Young school 1434 N Parkside. The march proceeds east to Central then south to Town Hall for an outdoor ceremony with Brig. Gen. Howard T. Markey as speaker and Army recruiting leaders also on the platform. The event features the Austin High ROTC and about 20 floats and scout and veterans units.
The Organization for a Better Austin screens candidates to replace Tom Gaudette whose contract expires June 30. President Justin McCarthy says Gaudette may apply, and current committee members from OBA will interview contenders. Pay is to be negotiated, with about $16 500 from Catholic churches and other donations toward a $30 000 budget. The senate meeting May 27 at St Paul Lutheran will address the contract and congress resolutions.
Ald. Thomas J. Casey 37th ward on Chicago’s West Side is honored as Austin's Man of the Year by the Austin Youth Community committee. A 1,000-person crowd at Local 1031 will hear of his service to the ward, youth work, and urban beautification projects including the CTA L viaduct. Proceeds support AYCC youth programs. Casey, 37, rose from city clerk’s office to district foreman before being elected in 1965.
