Plan for Garfield Park Revival Garners Broad Backing

West Side leaders from politics religion and community groups express optimism over a Mid West Development planning report proposing a two square mile Model Cities study area. They foresee new schools facilities and jobs rejuvenating East West Garfield Park and parts of Austin Lawndale with long range aims up to 1982. Pictorial Series Wins 2nd National Award

Community Publications earns its 113th editorial award since 1947 as a pictorial series from Austin death by own action attempt receives honorable mention in the 1967 National Better News paper contest. Photographer Richard Holman captured the May 25 1966 layout for Community Publications. Bruce Sagan will receive the NNA honor at the June convention in Richmond Va. The contest drew over 2700 entries from 50 states and includes 6600 publishers and editors.

Far Reaching Proposals Set Main Objectives of Congress

Justin McCarthy a longtime West Side figure was chosen by about 0 delegates as founding president of the Orga nization or as a Better Austin. The Austin event at Rockwood hall named 22 officers, ratified by laws, and adopted resolutions to run OBA amid hot humid weather and a sparse crowd. Delegates elected 5 main officers and 34 vice presidents from a 47-candidate slate after weeks of nominating committee work.

The West-Northwest Side prepares for graduation with 2,951 seniors across nine high schools. Grants Awarded Two Area Groups

Grants totaling 5000 dollars were given to two West Side organizations by the Rock River conference of the Methodist church at its DeKalb meeting. Four thousand went to the Garfield Organization and one thousand to the Greater Austin convention. The funds are part of ten grants totaling twenty two thousand dollars aimed at stabilizing populations, improving housing and civic affairs, and developing leadership and social goals for the area.
