Parents claim victory over the Chicago Board of Education plan to place mobile classrooms at May School. They say students will be bused to Burbank and other West Side schools starting next semester, and demand the seventh and eighth graders be moved. The group cites overcrowding, safety concerns and lack of resources as reasons to reject mobile units.
Emmet elementary school will not add mobile classrooms. The district will seek other solutions to overcrowding, likely a boundary change to be effective in February. Francis B. McKeag, assistant superintendent of schools in charge of planning, told a Columbus Park meeting last Tuesday. Other options include using a church or other suitable community space.
District 4 schools confront overcrowding despite surplus classrooms. Spencer uses twelve mobile units to be replaced by a new wing. some units may stay. May and Emmet face removals and reversals over mobile placements. Community opposition shapes plans for a larger Austin school and site options north or south of Lake.
