MOSCOW AP Nixon and Brezhnev wrap a historic seven day summit by signing a declaration of principles. The accord pledges peaceful coexistence and aims for total world disarmament.
Moscow AP reports that despite warm top-level diplomacy, American and Soviet negotiators clash on security and press access at the Kremlin Borovitsky Gate. The joint communique notes no Vietnam progress but cites troop reductions and Middle East peace, with a Moscow to Kiev flight delay and a follow-up summit invitation accepted by Brezhnev Kosygin Podgorny.
Memorial Day events on the Somerset Court House steps featured the Somerset Area High School Band, Judge John G. Brosky, and speaker Thomas F. Lansberry. Brosky emphasized duty to country, honoring veterans and the defense of freedom across eras from Washington to Vietnam.
Western Pennsylvania warms with showers and thundershowers likely Tuesday night. Highs Tuesday mid 70s to low 80s, lows Tuesday night in the 50s. Wednesday remains mostly cloudy and cooler with a chance of showers, highs mid to low 70s. Winds southwest at 10 to 20 mph Tuesday.
Berlin’s Memorial Day parade featured the historic Berlin Fife and Drum Corps under William Allfather. The procession highlighted blue Revolutionary War uniforms sewn by Mrs. Charles Brown with yellow trim and gold buttons, honoring nearly 2 million fallen across eight wars.
A 53 year old New Baltimore man in critical condition and his 51 year old wife in fair condition were injured when their vehicle left Route 31 and struck an oak tree near Mt Zion Church. They were returning from a wedding when the crash occurred at 12 30 a m Sunday. Two Berlin youths were treated for injuries after a head on collision on a township road near Berlin as they tried to avoid a deer. A Mt Pleasant man was treated at Somerset hospital after his car struck a tree and rolled over an embankment near Edie.
The New Centerville and Rural Fire Department were called at 9 50 a m Saturday to the McKeesport YMCA Camp in Rockwood to extinguish a fire in the recreation building. An overheated oil furnace caused the blaze. Caretaker William Winters contained it to the furnace room until fire crews arrived and put it out. Damage is estimated at 3000 dollars and was insured. Three fire trucks and 22 men responded.
A rifleman opened fire at North Hills Mall in Raleigh injuring eight and killing three before killing himself. Senator B Everett Jordan escaped unharmed as witnesses described the gunman firing at anything that moved. The victims were Jackie Wharton James Henry and Mel Harrison. Harvey Glenn McLeod, 23, of Raleigh, was identified as the shooter.
The three day Memorial Day period ended with 58 deaths as travelers began returning home. Severe weather from showers and storms made roads slick especially in the South and Midwest while temperatures stayed in the 70s and 80s across much of the country.
In Saigon a North Vietnamese artillery barrage hit a stalled South Vietnamese relief column trying to reopen Highway 13 to An Loc. Fifteen government soldiers were killed and 85 wounded as the attack followed a prior ambush that killed and wounded over 200 Saigon troops. Kontum battles continued five days with heavy bombing by U S forces as the northern front remained quiet.
