KOJE ISLAND Korea May 27 The Reds murdered 115 of their own in gaining control inside Koje Prison compounds starting September last year. The worst fighting occurred Sept 16–20 with many beaten to death or executed after kangaroo court rulings. Dozens of guards and prisoners were wounded as Allied forces tried to intervene.
In a collision, explosion, and fire on two oil laden tankers in the Delaware River near Port Penn two men are dead and six plus presumed lost. The barge EB D Dodds carrying about 700000 gallons of gasoline crashed into the tanker SS Michael, a 10441 ton vessel loaded with crude oil. One crewman aboard the Dodds was rescued as flames and explosions engulfed the ships. The fate of the Michael crew of about 40 was not known immediately. The incident follows two earlier shipping collisions in the river area within two weeks.
Allied fighter bombers struck the Pyongyang to Sukchon rail corridor in northwest Korea, hitting 52 supply sites and pounding red lines elsewhere. U S Sabre jets patrolled for MIGs but observed none as Chinese forces retreated on Sunday and no major clashes occurred on the western front.
Panmunjom talks reopen with Allies wary of Communist aims. Maj. Gen. William K. Harrison Jr. seeks a cooling period after heavy propaganda on prisoner repatriation, amid 100,000 internees saying they prefer death to return. U. N. offers to swap 70,000 red prisoners for about 12,000 held by the Reds.
Mrs. Charles G. Sechler fractured both bones in the right leg after falling on basement steps at her home. She rests comfortably at Somerset Community Hospital with satisfactory condition. Her son Donald is graduating from Somerset High School Wednesday night. she may be discharged later in the week.
Rep Richard M Simpson of Huntingdon addressed the Confluence Lions Club on charter night at Dodd's Hotel. He noted a 33 percent income tax burden and argued against new taxes, touched on Korea and arms supplies, and praised annual attendance by D H Pore. Carl Norman hosted the event with Judge Lansberry and Mrs Lansberry, along with former Congressman Carl Hoffmann who spoke briefly.
Harrisburg May 26 A warning to about 200 western Pennsylvania strip mine operators to forfeit $400,000 in bonds if they do not restore stripped land. Secretary Maize says they have until July to restore contours and reforest to the forests and waters department’s satisfaction under the 1945 soft coal strip mine law. The bond was $200 per acre, with minimums raised to $300 per acre and $3,000 per project. This is the first large scale enforcement.
W. D. Baker was reelected president of the Meyersdale Community Hospital board at the recent reorganization. S. S. Susser remains secretary and R. H. Bowman treasurer. New officers are Harry Habel, first vice president, and T. A. McKenzie, second vice president. The hospital building should open in July if ordered equipment arrives.

Mrs. L. B. Thompson of East Orange New Jersey 33 a former WAC and mother of a seven month old son testified before the Senate armed services committee on reserve forces legislation arguing women should not be forced from the reserves for having a baby. Senator Long favored voluntary rather than compulsory discharges and said regulations forcing WAC mothers out waste the services. Thompson served 1942 1948 in the WAC and later joined the organized reserve corps in the New York military district. She speaks multiple languages and assisted Korean government work in 1947 48.
In downtown Pittsburgh a 62 year old night elevator operator, Klemens Liutkevicius, was found dead in the building’s cab. The man’s legs were wedged in the shaft near the fifth floor landing, the body located on the cab floor. The incident was reported May 26.
Greensburg May 26 A scene of children playing cowboys and Indians led to the death of 16 year old Charles Walter Hull at his Derry township home. While indoors after rain he picked up a 20 gauge shotgun and aimed at his friend 13 year old Paul Granville who wrestled the rifle away. The gun discharged and Hull died twenty minutes later.
A B 45 Tornado bomber exploded and crashed near Franklin Virginia while on a routine flight from Langley Air Force Base. Three crewmen were killed Lt Herbert W Remington Lt Jerry O Causey and Lt Anthony S Butler. The bomber normally carried four and investigators found no evidence of a collision. Families of Remington and Causey lived in Hampton while Butler resided in Newport News. Wreckage covered about two miles near a highway with some parts landing close to houses.
At the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron colliery in Mahanoy City a rope broke while hauling a car 100 feet down a 6 degree slope. Charles Concernis age 54 Shenandoah and Joseph Puck age 40 Mahanoy City were killed. Injured were Mike Gnall 44 New Boston his brother Joseph of Mahanoy City Philip Keim 47 and Frank Millard. All taken to Pottsville hospital. The six were on a main maintenance crew.
Duane Bachus a 21 year old Greensburg truck driver was committed to Somerset county jail Monday on a charge of speeding and reckless driving. Information was filed before Charles J Harrison justice of the peace.
The Memorial Day Parade Committee of Berlin Pennsylvania invites all town and surrounding groups to join the parade. Parents should bring children with flowers to honor soldiers at the graves. The march begins at 10 a.m. from Upper Square to IOOF Cemetery with a program to follow.
State police sergeant leveled nine criminal charges against Lt. Louis Morgan and Patrolman Jack Soloff of the defunct morals squad. Six counts accuse inducing perjury and three accuse conspiracy to commit perjury, tied to testimony by Robert Leiner and investigations into morals suspects. Soloff allegedly ordered softer testimony before a grand jury. Morgan faces numerous indictments over Pittsburgh Police Credit Union management and morals squad operations. Soloff and two other officers were recently convicted of assaulting a morals suspect during a trial.
Somerset borough and its school districts continued the proposed jointure after separate board meetings May 15 and Monday night revisions. If not approved by all, a third joint meeting will occur and a final decision may be delayed a week. Homer Mazer resigns as agriculture teacher effective July 1 to join Berlin-Brothersvalley High School.
Washington May 26 Congress completed action on a bill extending presidential emergency powers until June 15 avoiding expiry on June 1. The Senate passed it last week and the House approved without opposition despite Rep Hoffman noting limited need given broad claimed inherent powers. Powers derive from acts of Congress and a later Judiciary panel bill seeks a longer extension with no authority to seize railroads or private property.
In Bonn West Germany and the Western Big Three signed a peace contract to end occupation and admit former enemies as allies. East Germany announced border strengthening as mobs protested the Bonn accord while Moscow warned of trouble ahead. The pact awaits ratification by four parliaments before taking effect.
Somerset Community hospital admitted 260 patients in April with 95 percent bed occupancy. The month saw 43 major and 72 minor operations, 124 emergency treatments, 370 X-ray tests and lab work for 2304 patients. Daily census averaged 76 with 13 newborns. 10,628 meals served at 57 cents each. Cost per patient day was 12.60 while income per patient day was 12.91. Alvin Glessner led the hospital board with Mrs. George J. Krebs, Attorney Charles H. Coffroth, Mrs. Betty Lewis Haupt, retiring superintendent, James Mayer, A. D. Graham and G. Floyd Dye present.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the frame dwelling occupied by Ira Emerick in Glencoe. Berlin volunteer firefighters arrived about 4 45 a m to find the blaze out of control. No one was home. contents were not salvaged. Property damage estimated at 4000.
Firemen were called out about 8 a.m. Monday to extinguish a flue fire in the home of George Lape in Shanleytown. No damage was reported.
Eastern Pennsylvania sees fair skies and a warmer Tuesday and Wednesday with showers likely in the west and north by Wednesday evening. Maryland remains sunny and warm with highs 75 to 80 Tuesday and fair, warmer conditions Wednesday. Western Pennsylvania reports fair, warmer Tuesday with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible Wednesday.
