Allied Fifth Air Force waged a daylong attack from dawn to dusk smashing a major storage complex near Pyongyang. Officials reported 117 buildings destroyed and 85 heavily damaged at Suan and Sinmak in what they called the war’s heaviest raid using jellied gasoline fire bombs.
Merchants report Somerset Thrift Day saw mostly fair to pretty good results. Harry N. Harrington, head of the retail merchants committee, called it a strong start and expected improvement as the event continues. Lloyd E. Kimmel noted increased use of the free bus service and stronger shopping turnout helped by sunny weather after rain.
The condition of William F Brooks general manager of Som erset American has worsened at Allegheny General hospital in Pittsburgh since March 13 He is now in an oxygen tent His daughter Mrs Norman Pyle of West Patriot Street has been at his side and plans to return after a brief trip home
The state elections bureau reported Senator Edward Martin spent 152.18 to win the Republican nomination for another six year term with no receipts shown. Half of expenses were for long distance calls to 67 GOP county chairmen. Filing deadline for expense statements was today.

Dr Charles I Shaffer longtime superintendent of the Somerset State Hospital announced his resignation effective June 1 to take a vacation and consider future work. He has served since 1936 guiding the facility through state takeovers and major improvements.
Communist inmates hold 17Koje barbed wire enclosures but are weakened by U S troops. Gen James A Van Fleet visits Koje and Pusan camps, says situation improves and he will soon command camps. 1,100 prisoners moved from Pusan to Koje while 5,500 remain peaceful Reds at Pusan.
Gen. Ridgway testifies before a joint session, calling Communist lies about germ warfare a monumental warning of red aims. He accuses leaders of false propaganda and warns the UN must not concede on repatriation, armistice supervision, or airfield construction as tension rises in Korea.

Pvt. John F. Vigneault of Goffs Falls New Hampshire was found guilty and sentenced to death by an army court martial for murdering two Germans after a tavern visit in MernebErg Germany. The killings occurred April 19 and the court noted the defense described him as mentally childlike. The victims were Karl Eckart and Lothar Schlosser.
In Johnstown on May 22, six counties Cambria Somerset Blair Bedford Indiana and Westmoreland will send contestants for the Miss Central Pennsylvania crown a $1 000 scholarship and a spot in the state Miss America finals this summer.
