Government seizes soft coal mines as Secretary Krug takes control after midnight. John L. Lewis stays silent on continuing work beyond the strike truce. officials press for a working basis under wage policy while negotiating a new contract amid health fund demands. A second meeting with Lewis is expected, with no promises given.
The United Mine Workers and anthracite operators held their 10th negotiating session in New York on May 21 with two new demands: holiday pay and overtime for maintenance men. Kennedy proposed keeping six holidays with pay and extending overtime and severance pay discussions, while Warriner questioned pay for work not performed. Talks proceed with no health welfare fund resolution, set to reconvene at 1 p.m. EST and no impact seen from government seizure of bituminous mines.

The Somerset Daily American raises yearly and weekly rates starting June 1, 1946. Deliveries in Somerset county and by mail outside will cost 9.00 dollars per year and 0.18 per week, up from 7.50 and 0.15. A courtesy period until June 1 allows subscriptions extended at the old rate, previously offering two years but now limited due to cost uncertainties.
Dr. John R. Steelman said the railroad wage dispute talks tonight did not look promising as the truce deadline nears. A compromise would exceed the 16 cent an hour board recommendation, while unions demand higher raises and an 18 percent overall increase.
In Chicago on May 21, union officials say a second railroad strike by one million non operating employees may follow a walkout. The non operating unions seek 30 cents per hour, received 16 cents by arbitration, and ask for 14 more within 30 days.

Miss Dolores Robison aged 22 of Drexel Hill Pennsylvania died in Atlantic City hospital from injuries in a traffic crash on the New York Road in Bass River township Ocean county. The car’s driver Richard Bunyan of Altoona Pennsylvania, 24, remains hospitalized with a compound fracture of the right thigh.
Teheran reports say propaganda minister Prince Mozaffar Firouz announced a state committee found all Russian troops had left Azerbaijan province and Iran by the May 6 deadline. He said Ala’s view on continued Russian interference was his own and not Iran’s official stance.

Alfred McEnhill, a builder, will continue painting his property despite AFL painters union picketing. A conference with union attorney Robert V. Canto and prosecutor Joseph L. Bannigan ruled that home privacy does not extend to commercial units. Union will target 2566 a beauty shop and 2570 an insurance office, while 2564 and 2566 remain under debate.
May 21 Pittsburgh remarks by Field Marshal Lord Henry Maitland Wilson former supreme commander in the Mediterranean World War II. He urged lifting the subsistence of Mediterranean peoples so they can be self supporting. He praised UNRRA leader Fiorello LaGuardia and warned Germany faces a recurring risk of rising again.
London may 21 not comment on the address by U S Secretary of State Byrnes and officials said no statement will be issued until dominion premiers’ views are known. The premiers, meeting in London, favor an early peace conference with or without treaty drafts by the big four foreign ministers. Bevin has reported to the cabinet on the Paris conference Byrnes reviewed in the address and is discussing it with the premiers.
The death toll from the B-17 crash near Fairfax California rose to three with Lt. Martin Hradisky of Ithaca New York becoming the third fatality. He died at Letterman hospital in San Francisco shortly after his mother and sister arrived. The crash occurred last Thursday during a flight from Los Angeles to Hamilton Field. Two of the six survivors remained in critical condition.
Early returns in the 28th district show Carl H. Hoffman of Somerset leading over J. Snyder with 5665 to 5020 in Fayette county precincts. Somerset county totals give Hoffman 3923 to Snyder 1893 across 29 of 67 districts. Democratic candidate John H. Rankin leads in 45 of 120 districts with 3155 votes to Lektrick 1224 and others. Fayette county shows William J. Crow ahead of E. I. Smith 2742 to 437. Somerset districts give Crow 1149 to Smith 1012.
Final returns show Somerset borough approves a $184000 bonded indebtedness with 1247 voting no and 1058 yes. Voters cite water supply needs. issue funds wells machinery pipelines and drilling. Turnout tallies 1487 of 2836 registered, with party breakdowns by precinct noted.
A Philadelphia federal court jury awarded N. Kaufman's Inc. of Uniontown $38,118 in a fire loss suit against Springfield Fire and Marine Insurance Co. of Baltimore for a July 1, 1943, blaze. The verdict covers $34,496 plus $3,622 interest, after the insurer contended the basement area was inadequately insured.
Pickets around three strikebound newspaper plants halt delivery of about 1.5 million papers daily for the sixth day. Representatives of the Morning Record Inquirer and Evening Bulletin and Local 628 AFL have not met since Saturday. Union business agent Col. Woockier denied demands for a half-hour lunch period, stating the strike seeks a 2 hour reduction in the work week from 42 to 40 hours by the clock.
President Truman nominates Harry E. Kalodner of Philadelphia to the Third U S Circuit Court of Appeals to succeed Charles Alfred Jones who resigned. Kalodner had been nominated for a new position on the court created by Congress in 1944 and filled last October by John J. O Connor of Pittsburgh.
Alfred Lynch, a three year old, was pulled from a swamp between Chester City line and Eddystone after falling from a raft. Marty Bronstein of Eddystone heard cries and dragged him to safety before he was taken to Chester Hospital for treatment.
In Pennsylvania primary returns James F. Dewey trails E. Wallace Chadwick by a narrow margin for the Republican nomination in the 7th district. Incumbent James Wolfenden retires after 10 terms. Vernon D. O Rourke is the Democratic nominee in Swarthmore College teacher. Dewey had backing from former State Senator John J. McClure.
In Nuremberg on May 21 Allied prosecutors introduced a denunciation by Raeder but defense counsel balked at completing the reading. Former German navy chief Raeder was in Russian custody. Karl Severing, ex interior minister, substituted at the stand amid arrest risks and past Nazi camp escape. Presiding Justice Sir Geoffrey Lawrence rebuked Raeder’s counsel for political argument.
London May 21 Herbert Morrison arriving from the United States criticized former President Hoover’s idea of a one man dictatorial food program. Morrison, lord president of the council, had not read Hoover’s plan but said his trip clarifies issues and should reduce confusion in coordinating relief.
In Pennsylvania primaries, U S Senator Guffey led the Democrats and Governor Martin the Republicans for November battles. Duff beat Shroyer for the GOP nomination with 255,078 to 46,600. Jordan ran against Martin with 18,576 votes.
Harrisburg May 21 Attorney General James H Duff, a candidate backed by the organization for the Republican nomination for governor, leads in a decisive result reported today.
