Kidnap Killer Hollenbaugh Shot Dead in Shade Gap Gun Battle
A gunfight with state police ended the manhunt for William Diller Hollenbaugh 44 who had abducted 17 year old Peggy Ann Bradnick in Pennsylvania. He was fatally shot as two teenage farm boys helped end the escape attempt. Peggy Ann Bradnick escaped unharmed after a week in captivity.

The American Legion Auxiliary promotes Poppy Days on May 20 and 21 in Somerset. Members with young helpers will station at multiple spots to offer Memorial Poppies and urge wearing them to honor war dead. The poppies are made by disabled veterans as occupational therapy and funded by the Auxiliary for rehabilitation and child welfare programs.

Earl Wilbur Wright, 53, was killed at Champion Pipe Co. in Boynton when a 21 foot pipe struck him while unloading from a truck. He died from a broken neck and fractured skull at Meyersdale Community Hospital. Wright, a long time employee, is survived by his wife Edna Baer and two children.

Halverson Wins Close GOP Legislative Race
Kenneth H. Halverson of Somerset Township Justice of the Peace pulled a tight upset in Somerset County’s GOP primary for the State House seat. He edged Dwane E. Ringer as results widened from Meyersdale to Somerset, finishing 178 votes ahead in 53 precincts. Edwards and Dr. W. R. Korns trailed. Halverson led in Somerset borough and township amid a strong Ringer showing elsewhere. Ringer conceded after Halverson’s late gains, halting a comeback by Edwards and Korns.
