Philadelphia AP reports legislative leaders promise public hearings soon on the Clean and Green amendment to lower farmers property taxes. With 98 percent counted the yes vote was 698 085 to 278 219 no. Rep H Francis Kennedy cautions careful drafting to avoid mistakes seen in other states. Proponents warn nonfarmers may face higher taxes.
In Somerset County, about 17 620 of 34 870 registered voters cast ballots in the Tuesday primary. George S. Pyle led Republican jury commissioner votes unopposed with 11 862. Farmland taxation passed 9 841 yes to 4 590 no. Shaulis home free James E Shaulis unopposed for ten year common pleas judgeship with 5 505 Democrats and 9 224 Republicans. Incumbent William S Orban won Republican nomination for county treasurer with 6 022 votes to 3 686 for rival. Mayor candidates saw William C James defeat William Barnhart 698 to 563. Borough council nominees dominated by Republicans.

Robert O. Hare was named postmaster at Berlin replacing the retiring John O. Ream. He began postal work at 16, served as officer in charge since June 28, 1972, and has been assistant postmaster in Meyersdale for over five years. He and his wife Dorothy Engle live on Meyersdale RD 1 with daughter Amy.
Engineers at Cape Kennedy study a sun shade to cool Skylab and allow a 28 day mission. Charles Conrad Jr Joseph P Kerwin and Paul J Weitz train at Johnson Space Center for a space walk to install the aluminum treated plastic sheet on Skylab.
Police pursue three Maryland prison escapees in a homicide spree that killed Ned Alday and three sons, with the slain woman's husband also tied to the case. Ballistics point to four guns, and a blue white 1970 Impala is sought along with the trio and a juvenile associate.
Sen. Sam J. Ervin, chairing the Senate Watergate investigation, predicted startling revelations and tighter campaign laws. He spoke at Bowdoin College after a speech, saying the probe will curb presidential powers and extend CIA oversight, with Congress asserting independence against Nixon on fiscal policy and Indochina bombing. He urged GAO supervision over campaign expenditures and tougher penalties, noting enforcement cannot jail committees, only individuals.
