Brig. Gen. Haydon Boamer takes over Koje island prison and ends lenient tactics used after the Dodd kidnapping. He vows Geneva rules, but warns Reds will learn who is boss as three prisoners attempt escapes and guards fire. Troops stand ready to prevent a large breakout.
House Democrat Mansfield introduces a resolution for an armed services committee probe into the Koje Island prisoner incident. Senate GOP Leader Bridges says Senate preparedness committee will investigate, cancelling a separate measure. He commends Pace and Clark for condemning the capture and release concessions.
Allied war planes smashed a large vehicle repair center north of Pyongyang and wrecked the northwest rail system with bombs. A three plane MIG flight from Manchuria attacked but was shot down. Lt. James H. Kasler became a jet ace with two confirmed kills.

The Communist side hurled expansive accusations at Panmunjom accusing prisoners of poison gas germ warfare and atom bomb experiments. Allied negotiators dismissed the charges as ridiculous and preposterous amid tense conference proceedings.
Oskar Thiel-Malek, a former Munich soap box derby manager, admitted spying for Czechoslovakia and was sentenced in a U S court to ten years. He received 700 dollars for four trips to Czechoslovakia last year to obtain funds to emigrate to Argentina with his invalid wife and two children. He managed two derbies run by the U S army for German children.
In Hannover on May 15 police broke up a rally of about 1,060 protesters against West German rearmament, resulting in several young Communists being arrested.
Judge Thomas F Lansberry directed not guilty verdicts for two Windber youths in a statutory offense case involving a 15 year old Paint Borough girl. One youth was cleared after the girl testified he did not molest her while the other admitted picking her up but denied involvement. A third larceny case against Charles Morris was dismissed on insufficient evidence as other witnesses identified a missing deep well pump. Sigmund of Kantner was directed to not guilty after prosecutors failed to prove receiving stolen property. The Randazzo case involving a suspended license remains unresolved.
News dispatch reports two Japanese hidden in the Marianas for eight years were captured by Saipan island constabulary. Interior department was notified and Elbert D. Thomas, high commissioner of the Pacific islands trust territory, will forward details after questioning.
Gen Douglas MacArthur warned Michigan legislators that political maneuvering in the presidential race could lead to the ugly threat of a military state. He labeled a potential Korea cease fire as part of a broader danger and warned of the Pacific becoming a defense frontier if the nation yields to the Iron Curtain. He dismissed talk of an imminent foreign threat while arguing the United States now has an arms economy.
Somerset announces the first Thrift Day on May 22 with Chairman Harry N. Harrington stating the event will occur every third Thursday except July and December. Merchants will run double truck ads and WVSC will broadcast radio spots.

The Somerset Rotary club meets at the DeVilbis plant at 12 30 with luncheon and a plant tour led by Milton Kotcher. Cars gather at the Ferner hotel at 12 15 for members needing transportation.
Three school districts Somerset borough Somerset township and Jefferson township discuss a proposed jointure in a Somerset High School meeting. The contract from the county office will be revised in the coming days and decisions await Jefferson township next Thursday or Friday with final outcome by May 4. The plan aims to provide a better educational program across all three districts, with minor changes anticipated for 1952 53.
May 15 reports state police say a Cleveland man Lynn Gilmer, 27, died when his car crossed the center line and hit a trailer truck on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Breezewood. The truck was driven by Richard J. Freeborn Jr., 28, of Bucks County. Freeborn was uninjured.
David Martin 29 of Holsopple will faces a hearing before Justice of the Peace H S Whipperman today. Charged by state police with operating under the influence after his 7 30 p m collision on Route 601 near Holsopple with John E Bush Jr also of Holsopple R D Neither driver was injured and damage to both cars is estimated at 25000
A tanker carrying 640000 gallons of high octane gasoline burned and sank in the Chesapeake and Delaware canal after a late night collision. Four crewmen are missing. Captain Roger Sears escaped with five others. The Lykes freighter passed, the Angelina followed, and two burned crew members were treated in Philadelphia. Survivors include Captain Sears and cooks Leon Bouchard along with four seamen from New York and New Jersey.
Washington May 15 The government unveiled new labeling rules for five leading bread types after 11 years of hearings and 17 000 pages of testimony The aim focuses on chemical bread softeners that could mislead consumers about bread weight While not fully tested for safety these softeners are considered likely harmless in small amounts The rule bars labeling as whole wheat unless the loaf uses 100 percent whole wheat flour including wheat germ and imposes labeling rules for white enriched milk and raisin breads
Pittsburgh May 15 reports the appointment of Mrs Aldene Large 45 as the county's first woman detective. A former investigator and social worker for the YWCA she also serves as president of the South Hills council of Republican Women and GOP committee woman in Dormont Eleventh District.
A 6-year-old boy, Rodney Carney of Johnstown, was struck and killed by an auto today. The driver, Donald Hainzey, 29, of Altoona, said the boy darted into the path of his car as it traveled along the street.
Charles Pebley, 36, of Central City, committed to Somerset county jail Thursday for intoxication. Information filed in the office of Justice H. S. Whipperman. Lee I. Green of Pittsburgh released after paying fines and costs.
A bake sale will be held at the J. C. Penney Store on Saturday May 17 from 9 to 12. Sponsored by the Somerset Council Daughters of America.

Senator Humphrey charged corporate interests seek to derail wage price controls in the steel labor dispute.
AFL government employee council proposed mass requests for immediate vacation leave by 600000 workers to protest Congress action limiting vacation carryover. Officials say it is not a strike, and William Dougherty of the National Association of Letter Carriers cites choosing now or losing the leave.
Lewis and Lizzie A. Piper of Derry township won a 17560 damage suit today against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in Westmoreland County Court. The Pipers claimed the state took a strip of their land while improving Route 22 between New Alexandria and Blairsville.
Melvin L. Shimmel, 34, of West Decatur is dead after his auto overturned near Allport. The accident occurred today in Clearfield County as emergency crews responded to the scene.
In Harrisburg on May 15 Senator Freddy Hare Jr a Somerset Republican was named chair of a legislative sub committee to study the cost of public education in Pennsylvania. Hare is a former majority whip and expected to be Majority Leader in 1958. He earns 8500 annually as an executive of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, a powerful lobby representing teachers. The PSEA previously pushed a school salary schedule that would raise the two year bill to 415 million by 1961. In the current two year period the cost stands at 287 million. The executive committee will meet in Harrisburg early in June to discuss new salary demands.
Western Pennsylvania sees partly cloudy cooler conditions with rain likely Friday night into Saturday. Eastern Pennsylvania stays partly cloudy and cooler with a high near 66 to 67 Friday and 66 to 72 Saturday. Rain chances increase by Saturday afternoon across the state.
