Four Fires Break Out Across Somerset County
Four fires erupted in scattered areas of Somerset County late Tuesday. A 100 acre forest fire on Route 160 near Berlin burned with help from backfires as winds hampered efforts. Two houses were threatened but saved. A 25 acre railroad track fire east of the village burned under investigation. An Elm timber fire near Bethany consumed one acre, while a sawdust pile at the Poorbagh sawmill caused no damage. About 75 firefighters battled the blazes under Berlin Chief Ernest Walker and State Ranger Matty Camp.
