U N FAO official E M Ojala warned that global grain stocks have fallen to perilously low levels. Major economies will rely on weather and the 1973 harvest for year ahead food supplies, with FAO proposing minimum national grain reserves at an upcoming meeting.
FAO Director General Addeke Boerma urges consultations on a global basic food stock minimum as harvest prospects vary. He notes no international acceptance of a universal safety stock and warns surpluses in the US and Canada have vanished, risking a volatile world reserve in crises. Ojala cautions that future surpluses may return but are unreliable.
