An Associated Press spot check across about a dozen cities finds most shoppers unaware or uninterested in the new meat price ceilings. Few would spot violations. some understand but do not monitor, others see no impact as Nixon’s ceilings take effect.
Milwaukee consumers noted higher price awareness with six of ten shoppers understanding ceilings while five would spot violations. In Boston two people reported seeing violations but did nothing, shrugging in response.
The Guadalajara home of U S consul general Terrance G Leonhardy sits in silence as hours pass with no word on his safety after his Friday kidnapping by a group calling itself FRAP. The group demanded the release of 30 prisoners in exchange for Leonhardy, and a Cuban flight carried the prisoners to Havana as authorities negotiate further demands.
The Somerset Area School District plans to borrow 150000 for May expenses as it participates in the Somerset County Vo Tech budget totaling 866222.82. The board also approves room and board transportation only for Millersville Summer Happening with a reduced cost of about 7000 and bids totaling 30816 for athletic and arts supplies.
Barry V. Tokar, 33, once Forbes High School star athlete, died Monday from injuries after a fishing cruiser explosion near Fort Lauderdale. His body returns to Stoystown for funeral and burial arranged by Charles R. Deaner Funeral Home. Coach Chester Pfeffer called him one of Forbes’s finest athletes.
Tokar earned All-County basketball honors for 1957 58 while also gaining honorable mention on the All County football squad. Pfeffer recalled his hustle and team success, noting 20 wins in his junior year and an undefeated senior season. He was also praised as an outstanding student and fast on court and field.
Alignments for Route 219 between Somerset and Beachdale will be discussed at 7 30 p m today at the Somerset County courthouse. The meeting is conducted by PennDot. A public hearing on May 22 will invite comments on the proposed route design features at Berlin Brothersvalley High School at 7 p m.
A two-truck crash Monday morning on Route 31 ten miles east of Somerset caused 36000 in damage. Harold Collins 62 and Mery Wiester Jr. 47 were treated and released at Somerset Community Hospital. Police said Collins lost control on a downgrade and crossed the center line into Wiester’s tractor trailer. Collision caused 5000 damage to Collins truck, 30000 to the tractor and 1000 to the trailer.
President Nixon aides deny involvement in Watergate as Elliot Richardson pledges to appoint a separate outside prosecutor upon Senate confirmation. Richardson seeks independent probe authority reporting to him, while the White House maintains Nixon did not participate or know of the cover up. News reports claim Dean may testify for immunity. Hunt receives use immunity as Mendacus hearings loom.
