A large blaze in Pittston, nine miles north of Wilkes-Barre, spread through the business district after starting near South Main and Railroad streets. By 5:30 five buildings were ruined, 15 families homeless, eight firemen treated for smoke inhalation or injuries, with crews from nine municipalities battling gusts up to 38 mph. The fire threatened warehouses and two junk yards, but tenants reportedly escaped. A continued report notes six firemen remained hospitalized.

Local student dies in Route 322 crash near Lewistown
Death claimed 27 year old David Pugh of State College early Sunday when the rider’s group failed to negotiate a curve and crashed into a bridge five miles north of Lewistown on Route 322. Companions Robert Simpson and Joe Knepper, both from State College and Somerset, were treated and discharged after hospital care. All three were students at State College.

Body found after two week search for Charles Lape
The body of 72 year old Charles Lape of Friedens was recovered Sunday afternoon four miles below Confluence along the Youghiogheny River after a day long search by firemen highway workers and volunteers. He had fallen into Laurel Hill creek April 25 while painting a bridge and drowned. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Hanger Funeral Home with Rev. C. A. Shilke officiating. Boy Dies After Flaming Oil Fire Destroys Home
In Meadville on May 7 a two year old named Nicky Cross died when flaming oil sprayed from an exploded coal stove. Father Edward and sister Edna, 15, were burned badly while mother Mary was unharmed. The eight foot frame house burned to the ground despite firemen from Lincolnville and Spartansville fighting the blaze.

Missing Fort Lewis Boy Found Alive Near American Lake
A three year old Fort Lewis boy, Tommy Jenkins, missing two days, was found on a beach at the American Lake reservation. He was brought to Madigan General Hospital for examination after searchers from the 10th Regiment Combat Team located him about 1500 yards from his Fort Lewis home. The boy showed no distress and was released for further check up.
