In Birmingham Alabama hundreds of Negroes skipped school and paraded to city jails led by Dick Gregory. Police reported about 1000 arrests with total in five days nearing 2400 as youths filled local jails. Demonstrations continued despite assurances of care for arrestees.
Two Republican lawmakers Blaine Hocker and Jack Seltzer pressed for a total reassessment of operations at the Eastern State School and Hospital before further funding. After a four hour Welfare Department hearing they toured the institution and described disturbing conditions. Hocker said his committee would tour the facility within a week and a half.
Len Kiser of Kiser's Wildlife Ranch in Central City proposes moving his private zoo to Somerset County and building a year round zoo with him as curator. He envisions a museum with Indian artifacts and his mounted skins, hoping to attract tourists and support from local groups.
