Five states hold primary contests on Tuesday with nominees for U S Senate two governorships and two U S House seats to be chosen. Ohio Florida Indiana New Mexico and Virginia vote as Kennedy praises two candidates in the Florida contest. DiSalle seeks renomination as McElroy trails while Briley and Rhodes are mentioned for Ohio races.
Independent gubernatorial candidate J Collins McSparran urged regulated strip mining protecting water purity and land beauty while fair to owners operators and public. He also pressed rapid interstate highway completion to boost recreation and economic growth. He avoided comments on game and fish agencies awaiting expert reports.
William Barnhart assistant fire chief said Somerset fire company responded to two grass fires on Saturday. The first at 12 50 p m started from burning rubbish and spread to one acre near Hetzels Studio two miles south on Water Level Road. The second at 4 10 p m burned grass by Elwood Brants residence on Water Level Road three miles south with no damage.
Sunday services marked the dedication of the new Beulah EUB church in Frie dens with Dr. Harry J. Fisher delivering the dedicatory message. The program included the Beulah choir, Hooversville Men's chorus, and the Somerset Circuit Junior Band, with honors given to long-serving Sunday school leaders and prizes to the oldest and youngest mothers and the largest family.

In Williamsport Pennsylvania hundreds of citizens led by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars marched three city blocks to oppose plans to disband the 722nd Transportation Company of the Pennsylvania National Guard. Mayor Grubb addressed the crowd from the National Guard Armory steps urging preservation of the unit which locals say sustains the town’s economy and pride. The proposal would cut 37 000 National Guard and 21 000 Army Reserve personnel and makes the 722nd a likely early target. The unit has historical ties to World War II and the Korean War and has served as a key local employer and community resource.
The United States exploded a nuclear warhead on a Polaris missile fired from a submarine in the Pacific. The 6:45 p.m. EST detonation occurred in the Christmas Island area as part of Operation Dominic. It was the fifth atmospheric test and first to use a warhead launched by rocket. Details such as altitude and range were not released.
Pope John XXIII proclaimed Martin de Porres a saint at St. Peter's Basilica in a four hour canonization ceremony attended by 30,000 mourners and 38 cardinals including Tanzania's Laurian Rugambwa. Delegates from nearly 50 nations gathered as Protestants joined Catholics in honoring the Peruvian mulatto who aided the poor and healed the sick.
Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov said in Seattle that while orbiting Earth he saw nothing to believe in God. He declared, I don't believe in God, I believe in man his strength, his possibilities and his reason.
The Atlantic Alliance closed its four day meeting in Athens with assurances that American and British nuclear forces remain ready to defend the West. Sgt Charles S Rogish of the Turnpike division released April statistics showing 405 traffic arrests absorbing 213 commercial and 192 passenger vehicles. Police investigated 50 traffic accidents with $38435 in property damage, 13 injuries, no deaths, and assisted 330 motorists.
Eric Lee Bargerstock aged 2 of Tarentum R D 4 died after choking when he became stuck while crawling through a car window. He was declared dead on arrival at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.
