Police say a second girl was found murdered in Centre County raising fears the same killer who claimed the life of a State College coed is the perpetrator. Authorities describe a similar pattern and urge vigilance as inquiries continue.
Fay Gates, 25, a factory worker from Bellefonte, was found slain on Spook Hollow road near her home. Police and coroner link the crime to the earlier death of Rachel Taylor, a Penn State student, suggesting a single sex fiend may be responsible. Investigators described similarities in the method, sought a tan Plymouth sedan, and called for federal help though officials noted no active bureau involvement.
Attorney Charles F. Uhl of Somerset joins five prominent backers of Senator Joseph P. Guffey in Harrisburg to canvass a successor to retiring Democratic State Chairman David L. Lawrence. The committee, formed after Guffey’s victory dinner, includes Harry Shapiro and Luther Harr. Uhl’s role follows his open primary bid that aided Guffey and his later decision not to seek re election to the state committee from Somerset after 44 years.
A disgruntled waiter wounded five others and killed three men including proprietor Mike Manos in a Martins Ferry restaurant after the owner refused to advance him money. Gunman arrested outside, claiming “I just got mad.” Coroner to order examination as prosecutor plans murder charges.
In Philadelphia Overbrook a 39 year old heir to a chewing gum fortune Robert H A Fleer was found dead by his mother in his car in the garage, carbon monoxide gas suspected though doors were ajar. Three years earlier his mother found his father dead in a similar scene on January 6, 1937.
Senator Joseph F. Guffey endorsed J Cullen Ganey of Bethlehem for the newly created federal judgeship in Philadelphia. Ganey is the U S attorney for the eastern district of Pennsylvania, and the endorsement was disclosed as reliable by a source.
Last rites for John Schell were conducted at the family residence on East Union street Saturday afternoon at 2 30. The service was led by the V J B Messenger of the First Christian church with assistance from Rev Dr I Hess Wagner of Trinity Lutheran church. The home overflowed with grieving relatives and friends and floral offerings testified to Schells esteem. Pallbearers included Simon K Uhl Dr Harold E Musser James H Seibert Charles Huston Gavin Millar E Berkeley Meyers and Orville Gallagher. Out of town attendees included Mrs Pat Matthews of me Nancy Pennsylvan ia college John D Hitchman fre aie Black and Herbert L Lambert of Pittsburgh Mr and Mrs James Dougherty Mr and Mrs Henry Ober man Dr and Mrs C Willard Walker of Connellsville John McGurk of Phillipsburg Charles Phipps of Buffalo New York Mr and Mrs Gavin Millar of Greensburg and George J Black III of St James school Hagerstown Md.
A string of weekend accidents in Pennsylvania leaves multiple fatalities. Among the dead are miners James Malikow sky 52 of Gilberton Charles Broderick 33 and John Lawson 39 from St Nicholas in a tunnel collapse at Mahonoy City Frank Bernetsky 50 killed by rock fall at Crow Hollow Marcus Hook explosives injure Mitchel Doering 35 of Chester. Also dying are nurse Sarah Ann Friel 38 from a roof fall in Philadelphia Frank Parr 62 struck by automobile Thomas Ballard 60 hit by an elevated train at Upper Darby Curtis Mull 38 and Jack Riessler 28 killed in a collision near Lig onier and teen football player Jack Dunning Jr 17 killed by a train near Ellwood City others die or are injured in separate auto and truck incidents.
Police Bertillon operators announced progress in identifying two of the three bodies found in old box cars in Kingsbury Run Cleveland. Leo Dumont reported good classifications for two victims and photographs were sent to Washington for FBI comparison. The third victim’s prints appear burned to erase identification.
W A Patrick of New Cumberland drove west on the Lincoln highway when a curve was missed near Stoystown at about 1030 Sunday evening. His car overturned after crashing through safety rails. three occupants were injured, one seriously. Stephen Singleton suffered severe head lacerations. Patrick had forehead wounds. his son endured severe shock and possible internal injuries. Only Singleton required hospital care after ambulance transfer. Front-end damage estimated at 150 dollars.
Two ex-convicts Dewey Clark and Henry Jones were held on murder charges in the slaying of Nathan Chinchiolo and Dorothy Wooster whose bodies were found in a field. District Attorney F C Clowdsley said a formal complaint would be filed and that the pair denied involvement despite identification by a garage mechanic. Chinchiolo, 23, of Stockton, and Wooster, 19, of Tracy, were last seen in Chinchiolo's car last Sunday night.
Earle E. Krause 32 of Meyersdale escaped injury when his auto left Route 219 about four Sunday morning one mile north of Boynton and overturned against a bank. Police quoted Krause saying he dozed several times before the crash and apparently dozed again, losing control.
London denounces Berlin claim that Nazi air forces sank a 30,000-ton battleship and a York-class cruiser near Namsos and Narvik as untrue. Norwegian minister Koht and defence chief Ljungberg arrive for talks in London affirming Allied support. The federal court authorized Don Martin as trustee to issue 30000 in trustee certificates and named Lelano Coal of New York as sales agent for the Vinton Colliery in Vintondale Cambria county. About 500 miners expected to resume work late this week after idle since March 14 under an agreed plan to pay 10000 of 53000 back wages before return plus ten cents a ton toward the rest, with 1500 death benefits to workers families. John Bionto CIO union president Local 621 and attorney Samuel R. Di Francesco represented the union and miners.

Arthur Kathner, who claimed St. Louis birth, was sentenced by Brabant provincial military court to 15 years for spying for Germany. Two Germans also received 15 year terms. Kathner was arrested November 29, 1939, after being denounced by a Belgian.
The Blair county Republican committee on May 4 re-elected P. A. Patterson of Altoona chairman and Mrs. Mitchell McCartney of Altoona vice chairman. Patterson was renamed by acclamation. Alexander Weir, Benjamin Russell, W. L. Dodson and James H. Hay were elected secretaries.
Budapest reports a large spy and propaganda network tied to France and Russia in former Czecho Slovakia regions was crushed by Hungarian authorities last week. About 200 people were arrested in Kassa Ungvar and Munkacs with Gestapo supplying information.

STOCKHOLM May 5 The Germans carried aerial attack to the far north of Norway bombing Kirkenes on the Arctic coast near the Petsamo district Saturday morning. Four bombs were dropped but little damage was reported. German airmen also attacked communities near Kirkenes.
Belgrade Yugoslavia May 5 government rejected a German demand to move 10 000 convalescents into Yugoslavia and proposed taking 10 000 sick children under 15 instead. officials recalled 1916 when convoys of convalescents provoked Hungarian doubts about continuing the war.
Egypt vows to defend against any attack as Allied forces rush to reinforce Alexandria harbor. Reports say Italian ships and troops mass in the Dodecanese, with 55 000 soldiers said to have landed. Berlin calls the dispersal of Malta a preventive measure. Egypt imposes a weeklong blackout and tightens public defenses.
Athens May 5 King George II and the Greek cabinet opened a strategic railway line from Salonika northward designed to move British and French troops if war extends to southeastern Europe. The new route, continuing from Salonika, strengthens allied logistics and northern mobilization plans.
