Tornado like winds struck Somerset on Friday afternoon causing property damage in the 300 block of West Somer street and South Columbia avenue. Windows shattered aluminum awnings overturned and debris scattered while several homes reported damage to patios and vehicles. Somerset Volunteer Fire Department responded to Lloyd's Delicatessen where an electrical issue caused a basement fire but no injuries were reported.

In Somerset County a late model convertible driven by Susan Elizabeth Kline 19 of Cincinnati Ohio was listed in serious condition after a two car crash on the turnpike. Kline traveling in heavy rain reportedly veered over a medial barrier and into oncoming traffic striking James Theodore Shraub 25 of Coatesville and his wife Sarah. The collision occurred about 11 miles east of the Somerset Interchange at 3 55 p.m. Two other minor accidents were reported. no injuries except the principales.

An Arizona accountant identified as Everett Claire Thomas, 47, Phoenix, recovered after receiving the heart of 15 year old Charles L. Martin II in an operation at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. Surgeons, led by Dr. Denton A. Cooley, used a heart lung machine for 46 minutes and completed the three hour transplant with encouraging signs and no rejection. The donor, Mrs. Martin, died of a brain injury from a gunshot. The procedure marked the ninth worldwide heart transplant and the youngest donor to date.
