A Somerset boy of fourteen was recruited by an alleged U S government agent, given rail fare and lodging, and nearly sent to Bremerton Navy Yard before Probation Officer Shaffer intervened. The boy, lured by a mimeographed poster offering jobs in U S navy yards with free transport, was found missing from home and school. His mother reported his absence, then Shaffer traced him to a Somerset pool hall and he was taken into custody. The boy’s and mother’s names are withheld.

Mrs. Marian Knepper dies in sleep at 74
Mrs. Marian Platt Knepper aged 74 was found dead in bed Wednesday morning at her brother’s home on West Union street. Death is attributed to a heart attack likely suffered an hour earlier. She lived in Somerset and was deeply involved in church work and local groups. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2:30 PM at Walter S Hoffman Funeral home with two ministers officiating. Interment will follow at Husband cemetery. Surviving are her brother George J. Platt and two nieces Irma Cromleigh and Rosetta Lobach. a stepson Rev. George W. Knepper resided in Akron Ohio.

A civilian electrician died and four navy men were injured when ignition sparks on the ground ignited gasoline during engine repairs at the Alameda California naval air station. Harold J. Herrea 40 of San Francisco died. John James Morrison 30 of Dormont Pennsylvania was hurt while attempting a rescue.
