A fatal hotel blaze in the San Francisco area leaves 22 dead and is suspected to be incendiary. Authorities say ten other fires occurred previously in the same region as investigators search for the arson motive.
In San Francisco an arsonist ignited a fourth street hotel killing twenty two and injuring about thirty. Police and Fire Marshal Frank Kelly confirm multiple fires were set overnight and on Sunday, with victims trapped by a flammable pile at the second floor stairway landing. Mamie Pulosky, 43, died leaping from a third floor window as flames engulfed the building.
Howard R. An army fighter plane leaving County Airport caught fire and crashed into a freight train, exploding and scattering burning fuel. Pilot Lt. Donald Foglesong of Tulare South Dakota was trapped under debris in a gondola car and identified as fatally injured. Local resident Lear Simpson reported seeing the burning plane and the attempt to escape. The crash damaged a nearby house chimney and scattered cockpit wreckage within 500 yards of the tracks. Foglesong served with the army air transport command.
In Muskogee Oklahoma Democrats reaffirm control of the Second district winning a special congressional election amid Republican challenge. Final unofficial returns show Democrat W G Stigler 20193 to Republican E O Clark 1071 from 304 of 331 precincts.
The right wing American Labor Party leadership conceded the rival left wing won the state committee slate in the New York primary. Both factions supported a fourth term for Roosevelt. In 1940 the ALP helped Roosevelt carry New York by 417,000 votes over Willkie.
A five physician sanity commission in Pittsburgh pronounced Martha Ashear insane and recommended commitment for fatally wounding Dr. Louis Schulman as he left his Squirrel Hill office on February 2. The 38 year old seamstress was described as incurable and dangerous, with ideas of unjust persecution. Judge A Marshall Thompson reserved his decision for several days.
State police report the deaths of Bernard P. Thomas, 36, of Roaring Spring and Ruby Vesta Butterbaugh, 36, of Altoona, found in a car near Dun cansville. A hose from the exhaust led into the interior while the ignition was on and the gas tank was empty.
Johnstown Chamber of Commerce official Ro land H. Dunn told about 100 Somerset business leaders that federal and state governments cannot solve the county's problems. He urged local self improvement, warned against dole, and urged reviving the pottery industry with ornamental jugs filled with maple syrup to promote the county. Second Lt. Richard Xu Stey of Maryland recounts a March 22 clash at Hill 260 Bougaanville where a jap pillbox ambushed surrendering Americans, killing a captain staff sergeant and private. Roy and his platoon query heavy enemy losses, with five Americans dead and at least 22 Japanese killed in the action.
Coroner Raymond C. Adamson continued the investigation into the death of Mrs. Ethel R. Wildman 75 found in the Monongahela River. An autopsy failed to determine the cause of death. a forehead wound above the right temple was noted with no skull fracture. Specimens were sent to a Washington chemist for analysis. the body was recovered by a towboat deckhand on the Home stead.
Aberdeen Washington reports Bernard Arends a 33 year old farmer killed his wife and four children with a 12 gauge shotgun and then fatally shot himself following a draft reclassification. Sheriff J W McIntosh said the incident occurred today.
Allied artillery pounded German positions in the Cassino area while raids targeted rail lines bridges and air fields across central Italy. German probes along the Cairo Terelle road were repulsed and patrol clashes persisted on the Anzio beachhead with bomber activity down overall.
