Two Pittsburgh officers killed in Penn Hills shopping center shootout
Arraignments began as Rose Dinkins 24 of Pittsburgh faced two counts of murder and related charges after a crowd gathering at a Penn Hills variety store ended with the deaths of Penn Hills Sgt. William Schrott and Patrolman Bartley Connolly. A second suspect Robert Kemp 29 was to be arraigned and a third man released. An off duty officer and Dinkins were wounded.

The 25th Maple Festival drew thousands to Meyersdale with two parades a car show and rail tour traffic. Baltimore visitors rode in on Western Maryland Rail Road trains to see steam engine No 13 though it broke down. Maryland and Pennsylvania high schools competed for cash prizes with Severna Park high school topping local bands in the parade.
