Christner to Enter Farview Hospital from Somerset
Deputy Sheriffs Hare Baldwin and Elmer Schmeyer drove to Pittsburgh to return John Christner, a former Garrett resident, from Western Penitentiary to Somerset jail. He will be moved to Farview State Hospital for the criminal insane after a Somerset court commission pronounced him criminally insane following a burglary arrest in 1939. He had escaped Rockview Penitentiary, was recaptured, and later deemed insane. The transfer was ordered today by Sheriff Merle Glessner and Deputy Howard Baldwin.

Windber mine foreman killed in motor collision
Gerald Miller Douglass 30, night foreman at Berwind- White Coal No 37 Upper Mine, was killed when two mine motors collided outside the mine early Monday. His assistant foreman Joseph Bowers suffered minor injuries. Authorities led by Deputy Coroner John Strank and Mine Inspector M. W. Thoma investigated. one motor slowed then was struck by the other. Douglass, a Windber native, joined the company in 1929 and rose to night foreman in 1937. He left a wife Ruth and two children Jane Alyce and Thomas Gerald, with surviving family including his mother Loretta Miller Douglass and siblings. He was a member of Conemaugh Valley Lodge 692 F and A M Johnstown and the Windber fire department.
