Fire at Sloane House YMCA Kills Five. 18 Injured
A 14 story YMCA building at 34th Street between Broadway and 9th Avenue suffered a major blaze on the seventh floor. Five people were killed and 18 injured as firefighters performed up to 40 aerial rescues. About 1,000 residents were in the structure when the fire started.

Two College Men Arrested on Turnpike
James S. Mainzer 21 of University Station Sewanee Tenn and Robert C. Bass 18 of Louisville Ky were arrested Tuesday at 10 pm on the turnpike. Mainzer charged with violation of the Uniform Firearms Act bail set at 1000 dollars for carrying a loaded .38 revolver. Bass charged with possession and consumption of liquor fined 36 dollars unable to pay. Police said they were stopped in the eastbound Stonycreek Township section of the pike.

Rockwood Borough thefts target coins and station receipts
