Somerset County Auditors issued a Friday statement claiming the public deserves the full story behind a mandamus filed against County Commissioners. The filing seeks payment of back wages to Mrs. Loris Bender, an auditor’s clerk, while the auditors contend she was never dismissed and is not an employee.
A 1971 audit letter from Somerset County Auditors' solicitor Frank A. Orban to the County Commissioners lists seven major errors in county records. The letter notes misallocated receipts and expenditures, missing 1970 records, and calls for a corrected, formal 1970 statements to enable a proper audit.
Miss America Phyllis George discussed her views on change and spoken role during a Rotary Club luncheon in Somerset County. She described her year as Miss America, noted plans after her reign, and recalled meetings with presidents and celebrities. She will host tonight’s Miss Laurel Highlands Pageant at Somerset Area High School with the Somerset Jaycees organizing.

The Turnpike District Planning and Development Commission board met in Somerset and voted to rename the group Southern Alleghenies Planning and Development Commission. The Conemaugh Somerset Town ship Land Use Planning Proposal received tentative second priority with a $10 000 cost, to be managed by the Somerset County Planning Commission. The plan aims to align development along U S 219 interchange areas with land suitability and consolidate past planning efforts. Two Vocational Technical High School projects were reviewed including a $250 000 computerized career information system that would aid K 12 guidance, which was tabled, and a $150 000 instructional equipment package approved for review. Final funding decisions on the pump station and sewer portion were delayed due to local difficulties.
Western Pennsylvania forecast shows cloudy cold with a 40 percent chance of precipitation tonight and 20 percent Saturday. Weekend highs in the 30s and 40s with light northwest winds. Meyersdale Industrial Park project delayed to April. Somerset County plans include 75 percent funding for youth leadership and summer intern programs, a July start for a Comprehensive Day Care Center serving about 60 children, and family planning and child care services efforts funded via SAP from the Appalachian District across six counties.
The 25th Somerset County Maple Festival in Meyersdale opens with the coronation of Miss Lor rie Yutzy Maple Queen XXV at Meyersdale Area High School at 3 p.m. A week of events follows featuring court members, performances, a Maple King contest, parades and a party lineup across festival venues.
