Union Urges End to Vacations by State Highway Maintainers
Harrisburg union leaders told 6000 maintenance workers in the Pennsylvania State Employes Council to stop one day work stoppages linked to a 10 percent staff cut. Executive director Tony Fiorello said a meeting with Highways Secretary Wilbur Webb would be sought to resolve furloughs after Webb warned of possible dismissals for extended absences.

About 175 field maintenance workers in Somerset County abstained from work Friday in protest of two layoffs. Chester Keith Local 1228 chief steward said roughly 50 non unions reported for duty while all union members were absent. Earl Murray Lavansville and Fiore Donio Jenners were furloughed by Earl M. Younkin on March 6. The union says the men will return today.
