Harrisburg reports only about 42 percent of expected revenue from the new state income tax with roughly $40 million collected so far. With 20 percent of returns in and a $950 million target, officials warn time is limited before the filing deadline.
In the first year many taxpayers delay payments while those owed refunds file early. Of about one million returns, 55 percent owed money, 39 percent claimed refunds, and 6 percent were even. The state expects more returns as April 15 nears and will begin post auditing a few weeks after the deadline, sharing account information with the IRS.
Jury of 12 returned a guilty verdict of voluntary manslaughter for Harry O. Kimmel in the Raymond Keith Miller case. The judge noted leniency recommendations while no sentence was handed down. Kimmel testified about the sequence leading to the fatal shot and his actions at the Fern dale area before the Nov. 29, 1971 incident.
A joint federal study warns antipollution costs could push hundreds of small factories out of business causing local recessions and higher prices. It notes large corporations may survive best, while overall GNP may dip by billions without policy action.
Senate leaders Mansfield and Aiken unveil a constitutional amendment creating a national presidential primary held in August with a 40 percent threshold, runoff if needed, and continued national conventions for VP picks and platforms. The plan requires two‑thirds Senate and House approval and 38 states ratification.
Five prominent judges from varied backgrounds will select the 1972 Miss Laurel Highlands. The event, under Somerset Jaycees sponsorship, is at 8 p m March 18 at Somerset Senior High School.
Linda Garlitz a 17 year old Salisbury Elk Lick High School senior has been named a recipient of one of two journalism scholarships to Point Park College Pittsburgh by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association. She is sponsored by Meyersdale Republican and has three years in high school journalism plus activity in music and community service.
