State Industrial Authority Generates County Jobs
Harrisburg reports that Somerset County has gained over 1,900 jobs since 1956 through PIDA loan assistance. Fifteen projects total $6.9 million in costs, with $2.7 million funded by loans and the rest locally. The payroll is about $13.47 million annually and includes projects for Atlas Hospital Equipment, Windber plants, Glosser Bros, New England Gear Works, and Coleman Co among others.

Girl Fatally Injured Struck by Pick Up on Route 55177
A 12 year old girl, Reita Renee Neal, died after being struck by a pickup driven by Clifford E. Holsapple on Route 55177 in Paint Township. The collision occurred as the children walked in the road near their home. Neal died at Windber Hospital from a broken neck and other injuries. Holsapple, 56, received treatment for shock. The crash ended with the truck overturning. This was Somerset County's first highway fatality of the year.
